Wisconsin’s Men’s Swimming at Rainbow Invite

Honolulu, Hawaii – The University of Wisconsin men’s swimming team returned to action Friday night and Saturday, competing in the 26th annual Rainbow Invitational. The two-day event consisted of the Duke Kahanamoku Sprint Meet and the Aileen Soule Classic and was not scored. UW competed against BYU, Saint John’s, UW-Stevens Point, Hawaii and Michigan State.

In 12 events on Friday, the Badgers picked up seven wins. UW grabbed nine victories on Saturday in 11 events for a weekend total of 16 wins.

Sophomore Matt Marshall (Chico, Calif.) picked up seven wins, including four relay wins. Marshall swam to victory in the 50-yard butterfly (22.39) and 100 fly (49.67) on Friday and the 50 free (21.18) on Saturday.

Sophomore Dale Rogers (Oroville, Calif.) garnered six wins on the weekend, including three relay wins. Rogers outswam opponents in the 50 free (20.60) on Friday and twice in the 100 free (45.55 on Friday, 45.41 on Saturday).

Senior Brendan Coyne (Pelham, Ala.) matched Rogers’ output, picking up six wins, including four relays. Coyne finished first in the 100 IM (51.25) on Friday and the 200 IM (1:51.74) on Saturday.

Rounding out the individual victories for the Badgers are sophomore Pat Torpey (Mentor, Ohio) with three and freshman Eric Wiesner (Montrose, Colo.) with one. Torpey finished first in the 1000 free (9:34.89), 200 fly (1:51.77) and 500 free (4:35.92) on Saturday. Wiesner took first in the 200 free (1:40.86).

Four UW relay teams finished in the top spot, including the 200 medley relay (Coyne, Kevin Zakrzewski, Marshall and Rogers in 1:31.12) and the 500 free relay (Marshall, Chris Anderson, Coyne and Wiesner in 3:29.13) on Friday and the 400 medley relay (Coyne, Brian Neuman, Marshall and Rogers in 3:22.60) and the 400 free relay (Marshall, Coyne, Anderson and Rogers in 3:02.04) on Saturday.

The Badgers take another month off from the competitive waters before returning to action at the Big Ten Quad Duals in West Lafayette, Ind., Feb. 1-2.
