Ohio State Dominates on Day Two of Georgia Diving Invitational

ATHENS, Ga., Jan. 5. PENN.State’s Steve Bohner won
the men’s 1-meter event, while Melanie Johnson of Ohio State took top honors in the women’s 3-meter competition on the second day of competition of the
2002 Georgia Diving Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens. Ohio State dominated competition for the day.

Bohner tallied 310.55 points in the finals to finish first in the 1-meter springboard after posting a score of 283.75 in the prelims. Ohio State’s Heath Knowling, who had the highest prelim score of 308.20, finished second with a score of 307.20 in the finals.

The evening session featured the second-annual Bulldog Shootout which is a single elimination event with the top six divers from the men’s 1-meter competition. Each round consisted of each diver completing one dive, and the diver with the lowest score did not advance to the next round.

There was an all-Ohio State final in the men’s 1-meter shootout, with Knowling winning the event with a score of 48.50 in the final round. Teammate Mitch Richeson finished second with a mark of 46.50 in the final round. Bohner, who won the 1-meter competition
earlier in the day, was eliminated in the first round.

The 2002 Georgia Diving Invitational will conclude Sunday with men’s and women’s platform competition beginning at 11 a.m.
