NCAA Women: Four Teams Compete at Sun Devil Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz., Jan. 5. WHILE most of its swimmers competed away from their strengths, Arizona State's eighth-ranked women's swimming team took part in the Sun Devil Invitational at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center,
Saturday, taking to the water against teams doing their winter training in Tempe.

Eight events were staged for competitors from ASU, University of Missouri, North Carolina State University and Lake Forest College. No team scores were computed.

Sun Devil sophomore Brooke Townsend cruised to the fastest time of the day in the women's 500-yard freestyle, 5:01.60. Fellow sophomore Florencia Szigeti, who is primarily a sprinter and backstroker,
earned the second-best time in that event at 5:06.91.

In the 200y breaststroke, sophomore transfer Melissa Bartlett swam 2:26.34 to lead all entrants, ahead of senior Sarah Baham, who touched the wall in the 2:29.26. Swimming slightly closer to her strengths in the 200y individual medley, Baham's time of 2:09.32 led the field, followed closely by North Carolina State's Anna Maria Gazda in 2:09.97. Distance specialist Amanda Stanford of ASU placed third overall in 2:12.18.

The Sun Devils other individual leader of the day was freshman Ágnes Kovács, who brushed up on her freestyle with a 1:53.24 effort in the 200y free. North Carolina State's Mandy Horn was next in line at
1:57.03, followed by a trio of ASU athletes, Emily Pokora (1:58.35), Jennifer Lowe (1:58.37) and Riley Mants (1:59.51).

ASU will continue with its winter training working toward a difficult Bay Area road trip later this month. January 25, the Sun Devils will put their undefeated 5-0 season on the line against No. 6 California, before challenging No. 1 Stanford January 26.
