FSU Men’s, Women’s Swimming & Diving Both Second After Day One

The men and women each won one event at the first day of competition at the Georgia Invitational.

ATHENS, Ga. – The Florida State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are both currently in second place after the first day of competition at the 2001 Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga. The men have 229 points, trailing the University of Minnesota who stands at 287. The Lady Seminoles (175 points) are currently behind the University of Georgia (244), which has won the last three NCAA women’s national titles.

The Lady Seminoles took the first final event of the night, the 200-yard freestyle relay, when the team of Jennie Lyes, Christy Cech, Emma Dutton and Liz Parkinson touched the wall first at 1:32.00. In the second event, the men’s 200 free relay, FSU was out touched by sixteen-hundredths of a second by Minnesota and settled for second-place with a time of 1:20.78.

Nnamnse Ammons placed first for the Seminoles in the 50-yard free with a personal-best time of 20.57. In addition to Ammons, the Tribe had three other swimmers place in the 50 free: Wickus Nienaber (third-place, 20.57), Michael Paulus (sixth, 20.78) and Matt Carmen (seventh, 20.88). In the women’s 50 free, Cech placed second for the Lady Seminoles with a time of 22.94 and Lyes finished sixth at 23.52. One other notable finish for the Seminoles, Justin Betts finished in third-place in the 200 individual medley at 1:50.47.
