ASU Men, Women Breeze by Wisconsin

TUCSON, Ariz., Nov. 2. ARIZONA State's men's swimming and diving team defeated the University of Wisconsin 170-120 in dual meet action at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz., Friday. ASU's women triumphed 169.5-111.5

Men's Meet
With the win, ASU moves to 2-0 on the young 2001-02 season, while handing the Badgers their first loss (1-2).

Among the Sun Devils' leaders was sophomore Ahmed Hussein, who won the 100-yard backstroke in 50.12 and the 200y back in 1:48.67. Sophomore Rich Jacobs was also impressive with a 3:59.37 to touch the wall first in the 400y individual medley.

Other Sun Devil winners included senior Mike Dowling in the 1000y freestyle (9:31.33), Gavin Meadows in the 500y free (4:35.76), senior Bo West in the 200y free
(1:40.04), sophomore Nick Brunelli in the 50y free (20.63) and freshman Joshua Gemmell in the 200y breaststroke (2:02.25).

ASU's diving corps was uncontested by the Badgers, with sophomore Gordon Blukis placing first among the three Sun Devil competitors in both the 1-meter (353.75) and 3-meter (332.95) springboard events.
Blukis improved his career best in the 1-meter optionals from 298.58 to 353.75.

Women's Meet
Moving to 2-0 on the season, Arizona State's women's
swimming and diving team defeated the University of Wisconsin (1-2) 169.5-111.5 at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz., Friday.

Freshman Ágnes Kovács continued her mastery of the collegiate field, winning three events to pace the Sun Devils. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Kovács stayed at second on ASU's all-time list, while dropping her collegiate best from 1:02.14 to 1:01.81. In the 200y
breast, Kovács won easily in 2:12.43, before turning in the sixth fastest time in school history in the 400y individual medley at 4:18.64, an NCAA 'B' consideration time.

Senior Natalie Burgess led the diving contingent with a first-place showing in the 3-meter springboard (339.10) and a runner-up finish in the 1-meter optionals (275.30). Sophomore Jessica Stenson improved her career best scores in both diving events with a fifth-place 255.25 in the 1-meter and a fourth-place 261.20 in the 3-meter.

The Sun Devils will not appear in competition next week as they prepare to open their official home schedule in two weeks. Friday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m., the ASU women will compete against UCLA and
members of the SoCal All-Stars while the ASU men will compete exclusively against the SoCal All-Stars as UCLA does not field a men's team. Saturday, November 17 at noon, both the men and women will be in action against USC. All ASU home meets are contested on
campus at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center, just south of Sun Devil Stadium.
