Meolans Wins Two, Sets South American Mark on Day 2 of Argentina Nationals

SANTA FE, Argentina, Sept. 28. RECORDS continued to fall in the second night of competition at the Argentina National Short Course Championships in Santa Fe. The meet is also serving as the Trials for the 2002 World Championships in Moscow.

José Martín Meolans from Academia de Natación Bucor bettered the South American record in the 100 meter individual medley with a time of 55.82 seconds, smashing the previous record by Brazil's Jose Souza of 56.66. Pablo Martín Abal clocked 55.97, also well
below the old standard.

The win was the second of the night (and third of the meet) for Meolans, known primarily as a free and fly sprinter. Earlier Meolans had won the 400 meter
freestyle, an unusual race for him, in 3.52.57.

Pablo Abal, who won the 50m fly in 24.00, established a new national record in that event during prelims
at 23.97, erasing Meolans´ record of 24.36.

Cecilia Biagioli from Jockey Club Cordoba keep improving and set a national record in the 400 meter free (4.16.+) en route to her victory in the 800 meter freestlye where she bettered the junior national
record with a time of 8.45.50. The performance won her a trip to Moscow and established her as the favorite in the 400.

Maria Virginia Garrone, also from Jockey Club improved her own national record in 200 IM with 2.18.07.

Five more junior national records were set in the second day.
