Stanford Names Vargas New Water Polo Coach

PALO ALTO, CA., Sept. 15. FORMER U.S. national water polo coach John Vargas has been named to succeed long-time Stanford head man Dante Dettamanti, effective Jan. 1, 2002.

Vargas will leave Corona del Mar High after this season to take over the Cardinal job.

He began his coaching career in 1983 and has led the Sea Kings to four Southern Section CIF Championships and six final appearances between 1984-89. Corona del Mar also won Division II Championships during the last
two seasons under Vargas.

"I'm very excited," said Vargas, who also coached the U.S. National men's team from 1996-2000.

Dettamanti will have a chance to go out a winner on his home turf as this year's NCAA Championships will be held in the Cardinal's new pool the first weekend of December.

The innagural NCAA women's water polo Championships were also held at Stanford last May with UCLA upsetting the previously undefeated Cardinal for
the title. The Bruins are double-defending men's champs.
