Day 1: 1997 Pan Pacific Championships

FUKUOKA, Japan – Olympic champion Susan O’Neill of Australia outswam a pair of Americans in the women’s 200m butterfly, leading her country to five gold medals on Sunday. The Americans won 3 of the 10 events on the opening day of competition. Host Japan and Costa Rica won one apiece. O’Neill, the 1996 Olympic gold medalist, was trailing Misty Hyman of the US at 50 meters, caught up at 100 and won in a time of 2:08.59. American Kristine Quance was second in 2:09.29, followed by Hyman in 2:11.53. American Ugur Taner set a new meet record of 1:57.35 in the men’s 200m butterfly. Brooke Bennett led a 1-2-3-4 sweep by the United States of the women’s 1500m freestyle. She was timed in 16:10.24, and was followed by Diana Munz, Erica Rose and Jamie Cail. Lenny Krayzelburg of the US won the men’s 100m backstroke in 54.43 (becoming the 3rd fastest performer ever in that event). Claudia Poll of Costa Rica beat her own 1993 meet record of 1:58.85 with a time of 1:57.48 in the women’s 200m freestyle. Japan’s Mai Nakamura never trailed as she won the women’s 100m backstroke in 1:01.13. Among the other Australian gold medalists, Michael Klim set a meet record of 1:47.60 en route to winning the men’s 200m freestyle.
