Chris Thompson, Rachel Burke Win 5K Open Water Crowns

CLOVIS, Calif., Aug. 19. CHRIS Thompson, who yesterday won the 1500 meter swim at the USA Swimming National Championships, demonstrated he's got what it takes in the water, regardless of whether there are turns and lane lines.

Competing at the USA Swimming 5K Open Water Championship at Millerton Lake, Thompson, the American record-holder at 1500 meters, edged fellow 2000 Olympian Chad Carvin, finishing in a time of 57 minutes, 28.88 seconds. Carvin, who faded in the second half of the race, finished about 50 seconds later.

Curl-Burke's Rachael Burke won the women’s race with a time of 1:01:54.30.

Burke competed in the 400, 800, and 1500m free at the USA Swimming National Championships this past week, but didn’t achieve her goals. "This makes me leave a little happier," she said.

Lauren Costella, who won the women's 1500 meters yesterday, was second, 36 seconds behind the winner.
