Huegill Beats Klim in 100 Fly on Day Two of Aussie Short Course Champs

PERTH, Australia. Aug. 4. AFTER the excitement of Grant Hackett's awesome world record in the 800m freestyle yesterday, today's competition at the Australian Short Course Championships in Perth was relatively anti-climatic. Still, there was no lack of world-class performances.

Men's Events
World champion and Olympic silver medalist Matt Welsh
breezed to victory in the 100m backstroke. His 51.68 was a second-and-a-half faster than runner-up Josh Watson.

Veteran Phil Rogers was the victor in a very close 100m breaaststroke contest that saw the top four finishers separated by only two-tenths of a second. Rogers, at 59.97, was the only man under a minute.

Geoff Huegill had no trouble dispossing of his teammate and rival, Michael Klim, in the 100 fly, clocking 51.11 to Klim's 51.73. Klim is still suffering lingering effects from his ankle injury suffered just before the World Championships. Nebraska grad Adam Pine was a close third.

Justin Norris, who is developing into a fine medley swimmer, outlasted Trent Steed in the 400 IM, 4:09.85 to 4:10.48.

Women's Events

Brooke Hanson was an easy winner in the 50m breaststroke, clocking 31.13 to defeat Olympic and World Championship silver medalist Leisel Jones (31.99).

Olympian Dyana Calub took the 100m backstroke in 1:00.21, with newcomer Frances Adcock second in 1:00.52.

In the 800 free, Amanda Pascoe dispatched Britain's Rebecca Cooke with a strong 8:22.06 showing. Cooke was second in 8:25.79
