Stanford Hires Chris Morgan as Assistant Coach

STANFORD, California, July 22. STANFORD women's swimming announced today the hiring of former Olympic coach Christopher Morgan as its new assistant.

Morgan returns to the area after serving as a volunteer assistant under the late Richard Quick from 1994 to 1998 at Stanford. In 1995-96 he was the assistant women's coach at San Jose State. Prior he was a high school coach at Palo Alto's Gunn High School (1994-97) for both the boy's and girl's programs. He began his career as a JV coach at Los Altos High in 1993-94.

"I couldn't be more excited about having Chris return to The Farm," said Maurer, who will enter her seventh year in the fall. "He has coached at the highest level and his commitment to having Stanford student athletes achieve their dreams in the pool and in the classroom is unparalleled."

Morgan coached three Olympians at the 2008 Games in Beijing, Switzerland's Jonathan Massacand, Barbados' Andrei Cross and Montenegro's Marina Kuc.

"After starting out under the great Richard Quick and developing those techniques abroad for the last 12 years, I feel completely honored and inspired to come back to Stanford as an assistant coach," said Morgan. "To work alongside a swimming legend like Lea Maurer is simply awesome! Not only has she made a huge impact at Stanford, but in the entire swimming community."

Since 1998, Morgan has been coaching in Switzerland, mostly recently, from September 2009 at Vevey Natation as the head coach. From August, 2004 to August, 2008 he was the head coach and technical director for Geneve Natation 1885. In 2007 he was named the Coach of the Year while working for Geneve. Prior he was a head coach at Red Fish Neuchatel (January 2000-July, 2004). He served as an assistant at Geneve Natation 1885 from September 1998 to December 1999.

His international coaching experience has also included: the 2010 European Championships in Hungary, the 2009 World Championships in Rome, the European Short Course Championships in Croatia in 2008 and in Hungary in 2007, and three World University Games in Thailand in 2007, Turkey in 2005 and South Korea in 2003.

Since 2000, he has won eight Swiss club championships. His athletes have won 30 national titles and 10 relay titles. Lang set six Swiss national records in the freestyle and backstroke. Massacand set five Swiss records in the back and individual medley. His athletes have numbered over 30 with the Swiss national team and have combined to go to eight world championships, 14 university games and 18 European championships.

The 1994 UC Davis graduate with a degree in biological sciences, earned his Masters in Human Movement and Sports Sciences from from the University of Geneva in 2002. He graduated from Los Altos High in 1989 and was born at Stanford Hospital.

While at UCD, Morgan was a conference champion in the 100 fly his junior season in 1992.

Morgan takes over for Shane Whildin, who left to take an assistant coaching position at Wisconsin.
