Nick D’Arcy Ordered to Pay $180k for Assault on Simon Cowley

SYDNEY, Australia, July 18. ACCORDING to The Australian, and several other media outlets from Australia, Australian swimming Nick D'Arcy has been ordered to pay $180,000 in restitution to Simon Cowley after losing a civil suit to Cowley today.

In 2008, D'Arcy assaulted Commonwealth Games gold medalist Simon Cowley in a bar shortly after the Australian Trials. Cowley sustained multiple injuries including facial fractures due to the attack. D'Arcy pleaded guilty to the offense in 2009, and was given a suspended jail sentence.

The injuries to Cowley forced him to have corrective surgery, and included the insertion of titanium plates.

"It's not a pleasant feeling to know your face is being held together by a number of plates and screws," Cowley had said during the hearing.

The judge awarded Cowley a total of $180,942 plus interest. A total of $135,000 is for "compensatory damages." The award could have been as high as $750,000.

The attack happened when D'Arcy was celebrating making the 2008 Australian Olympic team earlier that evening. D'Arcy was later dropped from the Australian Olympic roster.
