Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions: Tyler Clary Storms 200 Back, Posts Meet-Record Double

MISSION VIEJO, California, June 24. FAST's Tyler Clary put together an impressive evening, including moving into runner-up status in the men's 200 back world records during Friday night at the Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Champions. The long course meet is presented by TYR.

FAST's Tyler Clary crushed the meet and pool record in the men's 200 back. Clary blazed to a time of 1:56.25, smashing the previous mark of 1:58.11 set by Aaron Peirsol back in 2003. Clary leapfrogged Zhang Fenglin (1:56.34) for second in the world behind Ryosuke Irie (1:54.08). Clary's previous season best had been a 1:56.61 from April. New Zealand's Kurt Bassett touched second in 2:01.66, while Canada's Chad Bobrosky finished third in 2:05.33.

Clary started off the evening by throwing down a meet record in the men's 200 fly with a 1:57.32. That swim clipped Ryuichi Shibata's 2005 meet and pool record of 1:57.59. The time improved upon Clary's previous season best of 1:57.56 from April, and pushed him into a tie for 21st in the world. FAST's Robert Margalis touched second in 1:59.43, while Minnesota's Kyler Van Swol finished third in 2:00.69.

New Zealand's Melissa Ingram edged a meet and pool record in the women's 200 back. Ingram posted a victorious time of 2:10.81 to beat the 2:11.27 set by Tomoko Hagiwara back in 2000. Ingram has been faster this year with a 2:10.32 for 21st in the world clocked in Santa Clara earlier this month. North Coast's Kendryl Stewart finished well back in second with a 2:13.61, while Canada's Genevieve Cantin took third in 2:13.98.

Olympic hero Jason Lezak, swimming for Rose Bowl Aquatics at 35 years of age, clinched the men's 100 free crown in 49.71. Canada's Blake Worsley claimed second overall in 51.26, while Claremont's Michael Haney touched third in 51.47.

Erica Morningstar topped the women's 100 free in 55.28, while FAST's Katie Hoff claimed second overall in 55.90. FAST's Whitney Myers snared third in 56.62 to complete the podium.

Otylia Jedrzejczak, currently representing Trojan, earned the women's 200 fly title in 2:10.61. Trojan teammate Lyndsay De Paul claimed second in 2:11.43, while North Coast's Tanya Krisman picked up third in 2:12.70.

Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton posted a win in the women's 400 free with a 4:09.61. Her best time this year is more than three seconds faster with a ninth-ranked 4:06.04 from March. Minnesota's Ashley Steenvoorden touched out FAST's Kate Ziegler, 4:11.01 to 4:11.10, for second-place honors.

Snow's Matt McLean knocked off FAST's Michael Klueh, 3:51.30 to 3:51.96, for the men's 400 free crown. Mission Viejo's Chad La Tourette rounded out the top three in 3:56.10.

Erica Morningstar, Katy Murdoch, Lindsay Delmar and Breanna Hendriks won the women's 400 free relay in 3:51.26. Meanwhile, Colin Russell, Joel Greenshields, Chad Bobrosky and Blake Worsley finished first in the men's 400 free relay with a 3:24.55.
