Southwest Classic: Emily Seebohm, Matt Grevers Shine At Tucson Meet

TUCSON, Arizona, June 13. AUSTRALIA's Emily Seebohm and Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers shined at the Southwest Classic as the two won multiple titles at the tuneup meet held in Tucson, Ariz. The meet took place in long course meters format.

Australia's Emily Seebohm touched out Tucson Ford's Lara Jackson, 25.82 to 25.94, in the women's 50 free, while also capturing the women's 100 back in 56.24. Seebohm also won the women's 100 back for a third title with a 1:01.35, and checked in with a 2:19.28 to win the women's 200 IM as well. Tucson Ford's Alyssa Anderson finished second in the 200 IM with a 2:19.99. Anderson went on to win the women's 400 IM in 4:55.28.

Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers cleared 23 seconds to win the men's 50 free in 22.93, while also winning the men's 100 free in 50.32. Tucson Ford's Darian Townsend (50.84) and Nicolas Oliveira (50.96) also broke 51 in the finale. Grevers earned his third title in the men's 100 back with a 54.38, while teammate Cory Chitwood finished second in 56.35. Chitwood fired back in the 200 back with a winning time of 2:01.08.

Townsend went on to a double of his own with wins in the men's 200 free (1:49.89) and 200 IM (2:02.38). Tucson Ford's Austen Thompson claimed the men's 400 IM title in 4:29.38.

Santa Clara's Ryan Hinshaw snagged the men's 400 free title in 4:02.91 as well as the men's 1500 free in 16:00.68.

Wild West's Sam Hardin cruised to victory in the women's 400 free with a 4:19.27, while also doubling up with an 800 free triumph in 9:01.09.

Tucson Ford's Annie Chandler beat teammate Amanda Beard, 1:09.98 to 1:10.46, in the women's 100 breast, while Beard took home the 200 breast crown in 2:32.92 with Chandler placing third in 2:36.11. Australia's Kate Dimou, 16, finished second in 2:36.11.

Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson beat out Seebohm, 59.55 to 59.61, in the women's 100 fly, while Santa Clara's Charlotte Ruby earned the women's 200 fly title in 2:16.74.

Australia's Brittany Elmslie, 16, claimed the women's 200 free title in 2:03.31 with New Zealand's Melissa Ingram placing second in 2:04.09. Ingram snared the women's 200 back crown in 2:13.23.

Tucson Ford's Marcus Titus clinched the men's 100 breast title in 1:02.58, while teammate Clark Burckle won the men's 200 breast in 2:16.89.

Tucson Ford's Masayuki Kishida touched out Giles Smith, 54.27 to 54.78, in the men's 100 fly, while New Zealand's Shaun Burnett cruised in the men's 200 fly with a winning 2:02.24.

In relay action, Tucson Ford's Margo Geer, Kait Flederbach, Leone Vorster and Christine Magnuson won the women's 400 free relay in 3:48.50, while Tucson Ford's Gracie Finnegan, Vorster, Geer and Alyssa Anderson topped the women's 800 free relay in 8:36.72. Tucson Ford completed the women's relay sweep when Maggie Meyer, Annie Chandler, Magnuson and Geer posted a 4:13.20 in the 400 medley relay.

Tucson Ford also swept the men's relays. Nicolas Oliveira, Darian Townsend, Masayuki Kishida and Luke Pechmann topped the men's 400 free relay in 3:24.68. Townsend, AJ Tipton, Cory Chitwood and Oliveira snared the men's 800 free relay in 7:33.23, while Matt Grevers, Marcus Titus, Townsend and Pechmann posted a 3:44.70 to win the men's 400 medley relay.
