USA Women Roll Kazakhstan 15-5 At Kirishi Cup

KIRISHI, Russia, June 3. THE USA Women's National Team made quick work of Kazakhstan on day four of the Kirishi Cup rolling up a 15-5 victory. Three goals apiece for Annika Dries (Laguna Beach, CA/Stanford/SET) and Kami Craig (Santa Barbara, CA/USC/Santa Barbara) led the offense while Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI/Michigan/NYAC) did the job in net halting 12 shots. Team USA closes out the event with a match against the host Russia tomorrow.

The United States got things started early when Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA/USC/NYAC) found the net less than a minute into the match for a 1-0 lead. Kazakhstan would come back with a goal at the 6:37 mark to tie the game at 1-1 and that would be as close as they would get on this day. Team USA then ripped off three straight goals from Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA/UCLA/NYAC), Dries, and Brenda Villa (Commerce, CA/Stanford/Commerce) to close the period up 4-1.

It was more of the same in the second period as the red, white, and blue scored another four goals without allowing a score from Kazakhstan for an 8-1 lead at halftime. Dries chipped in two goals, while Craig scored another and Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA/Stanford/NYAC) converted a five meter penalty.

Craig would score again almost immediately at the start of the third period for a 9-1 lead. Kazakhstan would get back on the board to make it 9-2 but Team USA answered with two straight scores from Craig and Mathewson for an 11-2 lead going to the fourth. In the fourth Kazakhstan would get back three goals but the United States had the match on cruise control adding in four more goals of their own to come away victorious at 15-5.

The USA went 4/11 on power plays while Kazakhstan was 5/11. USA and Russia meet tomorrow to close out the Kirishi Cup.
