Mel Zajac Jr. International Meet: Natalie Coughlin, Brent Hayden Win on Second Night; Jake Tapp Doubles

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 28. THE second night of competition at the Mel Zajac Jr. International Meet at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver featured more fast long course meters times. The top performers included American Olympic gold medalist Natalie Coughlin and Canadian world champ Brent Hayden

Cal swept the women's 50 free, led by Coughlin's win in 25.61. Hannah Wilson took second in 26.04, and Liv Jensen grabbed third in 26.21. Cal's Caitlin Leverenz won the women's 200 IM in 2:13.03, falling just short of her 13th-ranked 2:12.80. UBC's Erica Morningstar finished in second place at 2:13.60, while Pacific Sea Wolves' Hillary Caldwell placed third in 2:19.54.

UBC's Hayden dominated the men's 50 free, winning in 22.83 yet falling well short of his 23rd-ranked season best of 22.37 from March. Multnomah's Carson Brindle finished second in 23.63, and Owen Daly earned third in 24.08.

UBC's Annamay Pierse won the women's 200 breast in 2:25.98, less than two seconds off her third-ranked season best of 2:24.10. Teammate Martha McCabe grabbed second in 2:28.16, off her eighth-ranked 2:24.43, Cal's Leverenz returned to finish third in 2:30.14. UBC's Scott Dickens touched first in the men's 200 breast in 2:16.47, while Edmonton Keyano's Richard Funk touched out Longhorn's Matt Lowe for second, 2:20.33 to 2:20.51.

Cal's Amanda Sims took the women's 100 fly in 1:00.01, while UBC's Noemie Thomas edged Sims' teammate Hannah Wilson for second, 1:00.24 to 1:00.31. Island's Julia Wilkinson won the 50 back in 28.83, defeating Cal teammates Cindy Tran (29.19) and Erica Dagg (29.86). UBC's Savannah King took a convincing win in the women's 400 free in 4:15.49. University of Calgary's Lindsay Delmar took second in 4:18.68, well ahead of Cal's Katie Kastes (4:20.03).

Langley's Jake Tapp won both the 100 fly and 50 back. In the former event, Tapp clocked 55.67 to edge Thunderbolts' Neil O'Halloran, who took second in 55.79. University of Alberta's Joshua Au ended up third (55.95). Tapp later posted a time of 27.42 for the 50 back win ahead of University of Alberta's Joel Greenshields, who clocked 27.57, and UBC's Craig Braizer, who checked in at 27.75.

Island went 1-2 in the men's 400 free as Keegan Zanatta touched out teammate Jeremy Bagshaw, 3:57.65 to 3:57.75. Cascade's Sean Penhale posted a 4:01.71 for third place. After doubling in the 400 IM and 800 free on Friday, Island's Alec Page won his third event of the weekend, tying University of Calgary's David Dimitrov for the win the 200 IM in 2:08.28. Dimitrov's teammate Jason Block finished third in 2:09.18.

The 800 free relays concluded the evening's racing. The University of Calgary's team of Katy Murdoch, Morningstar, Lindsay Delmar, and Breanna Hendriks won the women's race in 8:22.02. Meanwhile, Island's team of Blake Worsley, Zanatta, Page, and Bagshaw took first in the men's relay in 7:38.38.
