MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 24. CALIFORNIA's Nathan Adrian reclaimed his 50-yard free crown with an American record in the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

Adrian turned in a scorching time of 18.66 to best his previous national record of 18.71 set back in 2009 when he last won the NCAA title in the event. Last year, he fell to Josh Schneider's 18.93, or else he'd be a three-time winner in the event. That effort moved him up to third all time, as Cesar Cielo owns the U.S. Open and NCAA record with an 18.47 relay leadoff from 2008, and Matt Targett checked in with an 18.52 in 2009.

Auburn's Adam Brown nearly tracked Adrian down with a second-place 18.72 to jump to sixth all time in the event, while Texas' Jimmy Feigen earned third-place honors in 18.97 – just off his personal best of 18.84 from last year.

Arizona's Adam Small (19.03), Stanford's Alex Coville (19.25), USC's Vlad Morozov (19.38), Auburn's Karl Krug (19.50) and California's Graeme Moore (19.54) also scored A final points.

Minnesota's Michael Richards (19.39), Auburn's Drew Modrov (19.41), Auburn's Kohlton Norys (19.46), California's Josh Daniels (19.58), Auburn's Marcelo Chierighini (19.65), Auburn's Chris Manning (19.67), Clemson's Eric Bruck (19.67) and Columbia's Adam Powell (19.74) made up the consolation field.

Stanford pushed its leading tally to 104 points with California closing the distance with a second-place 94 points. Auburn (92.5), Texas (89) and Arizona (73) held third through fifth.
