Amsterdam Swim Cup: Femke Heemskerk, Sarah Sjostrom, Set World Bests

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, March 13. The Amsterdam Swim Cup came to a close today with some elite long course meter swimming. Two more world bellwether marks went into the books, while several other top 10 times were posted.

Femke Heemskerk and Ranomi Kromowidjojo put on a show in the women's 100 free. Heemskerk won in 53.70, while Kromowidjojo took second in 54.00 to grab the top two spots in the world in the event. Aleksandra Herasimenia had been the world pacesetter with a 54.28 from January in Belarus. Sarah Sjostrom finished third in 54.43 to move to fifth in the world.

Earlier, Sjostrom took the top spot in the world in the women's 50 fly with a 25.67. She jumped ahead of Therese Alshammar's 25.88 set in February. Inge Dekker placed second in 25.92 to move to third in the world, while Marleen Velhuis earned third in 26.81.

Lennart Stekelenburg moved to second in the world rankings with a 27.92 to win the men's 50 breast. Fabio Scozzoli holds first with a 27.72 from this weekend in Milan. Robin van Aggele took second in 28.37, while Panteleimon Pantis finished third in 29.12.

Sebastiaan Verschuren jumped up to fourth in the world rankings in the men's 200 free with a winning 1:47.82. Joost Reijns (1:50.43) and Pieter Timers (1:51.38) finished second and third.

Stefan Nystrand raced to victory in the men's 50 free with a 22.38 to move to sixth in the world rankings. Konrad Czerniak (22.62) and Pieter Timmers (23.00) took second and third.

Nick Driebergen picked up 11th in the world rankings in the men's 100 back with a 54.81. Bastiaan Lijesen (55.76) and Jurjen Willemsen (57.05) finished second and third.

Gard Kvale won the men's 800 free in 8:10.79, while Ferry Weertman placed second in 8:24.56. Horia Stefan Cristea finished third in 8:27.07. Martina Rita Caramignoli claimed the women's 800 free in 8:44.46. Esmee Vermeulen (8:56.29) and Judith Stap (9:06.83) earned second and third.

Raphael Stacchiotti captured the men's 400 IM in 4:29.58 with Laurent Carnol winding up second in 4:36.04. Jens Bakker touched third in 4:36.83. Wendy van den Zanden hit the wall in 2:15.40 to win the women's 200 back. Evy Witlox (2:16.03) and Annemarie Worst (2:17.02) completed the top three.

Tessa Brouwer won the women's 200 breast in 2:29.95, while Elisa Celli finished second in 2:30.82. Moniek Nijhuis wound up third in 2:31.86. Simon Sjodin snared the men's 200 fly in 1:59.66. Bernhard Wolf (2:01.62) and Veleimir Stjepanovic (2:01.85) rounded out the podium.
