NCAA Division II Championships: Drury Takes Day One Leads

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, March 9. THE NCAA Division II Championships kicked off tonight in San Antonio, Texas, with Drury jumped out to day-one leads in both the men's and women's team title races. The meet is taking place in short course yard format.

Drury jumped out to a big first-day lead among the women with 113 points, while Ashland stood second with 73 points. Incarnate Word (64), UCSD (55) and Wayne State (54) held third through fifth heading into tomorrow.

The Drury men pushed their leading total to 127 points, while Bridgeport held second with 82 points. Grand Canyon (74.5), UCSD (72.5) and Wayne State (54) completed the top five among the men.

Incarnate Word's Casey Hurrell-Zitelman, a former member of Texas A&M, grabbed the women's 1000 freestyle title in 9:52.60. Indianapolis' Maura Donahue finished second in 9:59.61, while Drury's Erin Dolan claimed third in 10:05.82. UC-San Diego's Matthew Herman cruised to victory in the men's 1000 free with a 9:02.67. Drury's Ryan Arabejo touched second in 9:05.78, while Tampa's Christopher O'Linger wound up third in 9:06.26.

Southern Connecticut's Amanda Thomas came up just short of the women's 200 IM DII record with a winning 2:00.88. Kate Aherne's 2010 mark of 2:00.56 withstood the attempt. UCSD's Alexandra Henley finished second in 2:01.82, while Drury's Ekaterina Alyabyeva claimed third in 2:03.15. Another close call happened in the men's 200 IM with Drury's Jun Han Kim clocking a 1:46.08 for the win – just short of Aleksander Hetland's DII record of 1:46.03. Incarnate Word's Nikita Belousov finished second in 1:47.87, while Queens' Jeremy Gregory wound up third in 1:48.03.

California of Pennsylvania's Melissa Gates put up a 22.72 to win the women's 50 free, missing Eunate Garro's 2009 DII mark of 22.64. Incarnate Word's Tamiris Nascimento finished second in 23.10, while Ashland's Julie Widmann snared third in 23.14. Wayne State's Andrey Seryy followed up with a 19.53 for the men's 50 free win. Grand Canyon's Michael Branning touched second in 20.09 after clocking a 19.98 in prelims. Bridgeport's Toni Valcic finished third in 20.14.

Clarion's Logan Pearsall won the men's three-meter event with a DII record tally of 565.15 points. Pearsall set the previous record with 557.50 points last year. UCSD's Tyler Runsten took second with 551.60 points, while Incarnate Word's Justin McDonald wound up third with 536.50 points.

Wayne State's Sara Franklin, Ana Gonzalez Pena, Ana Azambuja and Ashley Corriveau won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:40.78. Bridgeport's Oscar Pereiro, Piotr Safronczyk, Toni Valcic and Nikola Savic captured the men's 200 medley relay in 1:28.25.
