British Long Course National Championships: James Goddard Completes Strong Double

MANCHESTER, England, March 9. JAMES Goddard completed a strong evening, which included a winning effort in the men's 200 IM and a top-seeded time in the men's 200 back during the fifth night of swimming at the British Long Course National Championships.

James Goddard and Joseph Roebuck put on a show in the men's 200 IM finale as Goddard claimed a touchout triumph, 1:58.22 to 1:58.28. Those swims put Goddard and Roebuck second and third in the event this year. Only Michael Phelps has been faster with a sterling time of 1:56.88 from the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Ellen Gandy notched a swift time in the women's 200 fly for the win with a 2:06.13. That performance came up just shy of her world-leading 2:05.90 set in New South Wales last month. Jemma Lowe took home second-place honors with a 2:06.94 to move to second in the world behind Gandy. Jessica Dickons wound up taking third in 2:10.96.

Adam Brown improved to sixth in the world rankings in the men's 100 free with a 49.41 for the win. Grant Turner claimed second in 49.70, while Craig Gibbons earned third-place honors in 49.85. Georgia Davies followed with a 28.67 to win the women's 50 back, improving on her seventh-ranked season best of 28.71. Emma Saunders (28.80) and Lauren Quigley (29.38) placed second and third.

In semifinal racing, Amy Smith topped the women's 100 free with a 55.40, while Fran Halsall touched second in 55.81. Jessica Sylvester qualified third in 55.95. Stacey Tadd earned the top seed in the women's 200 breast with a 2:30.70. Molly Renshaw (2:31.53) and Kerry Buchan (2:32.37) qualified second and third.

Michael Jamieson captured the top seed in the men's 200 breast with a 2:13.22 to move to eighth in the world, while Richard Webb qualified second in 2:13.80 for a top 15 ranking. Andrew Willis also moved into the top 15 with a third-seeded 2:13.89. Goddard returned in the men's 200 back to qualify first with a 2:00.46. Roberto Pavoni (2:00.89) and Joseph Canlan-Shaw (2:01.96) took the second and third seeds.

In multi-disability events, Sascha Kindred was listed first in the men's 50 fly with a 32.23, while Natalie Jones was listed first in the women's 50 fly with a 41.89. David Ellis was listed first in the men's 100 fly with a 1:03.39, while Rhiannon Henry was listed first in the women's 100 fly with a 1:08.45.
