British Long Course National Championships: Hannah Miley, Ellen Gandy Blast Off in Britain

MANCHESTER, England, March 6. THE second evening of action at the British Long Course National Championships featured even more swift swims, this time by way of Hannah Miley and Ellen Gandy.

Miley took away a short-lived Indianapolis Grand Prix top-ranked time with a sterling effort in the women's 200 IM. Miley won the event in 2:12.01, eclipsing the 2:12.59 that Erica Morningstar clocked earlier this weekend. Sophie Allen touched second in 2:14.15, while Sophie Smith placed third in 2:14.50.

Shortly after Dana Vollmer took over the top spot in the women's 100 fly world rankings with a 57.66 in Indy, Gandy nearly retook the spot with a sizzling time of 57.68 to win the event this evening. Gandy had owned the previous world pacesetter with a 58.23 at the New South Wales Championships last month. Fran Halsall placed second this evening in 58.99, while Jemma Lowe earned third-place honors in 59.10.

Jack Marriott captured the men's 50 fly title in 24.33, while Antony James touched just behind with a second-place 24.38. James Doolan rounded out the podium with a 24.52. Michael Jameison followed suit in the men's 100 breast with a winning 1:01.31. Kristopher Gilchrist (1:01.40) and Richard Webb (1:01.57) finished second and third.

In semifinal qualifying rounds, Liam Tancock led the way in the men's 100 back with a 55.19. Chris Walker-Hebborn (55.32) and Grant Halsall (55.72) qualified second and third. Kate Haywood paced the women's 100 breast with a 1:09.19. Kerry Buchan qualified second in 1:10.20 with Stacey Tadd placing third in 1:10.26.

Gemma Spofforth claimed the top seed in the women's 100 back finale with a 1:01.54, while Elizabeth Simmonds qualified second in 1:01.60. Georgia Davies also cleared 1:02 with a third-seeded 1:01.97.

Robbie Renwick moved into the top five in the world rankings in the men's 200 free with a 1:48.80 in semis. David Carry joined him in the top five with a second-seeded 1:48.98. Jak Scott qualified third in 1:49.40.

In multi-disability events, Stephanie Millward was listed first in the women's 100 back with a 1:12.12, while Jonathan Fox was listed first in the men's 100 back with a 1:11.36. James Anderson was listed first in the men's 50 back with a 1:09.25.
