British Long Course National Championships: Rebecca Adlington Lights Up 400 Free

MANCHESTER, England, March 5. THE first night of the British Long Course National Championships got off to a sterling start with Rebecca Adlington lighting up the women's 400 freestyle event.

Adlington took a run at Laura Manaudou's textile-best time of 4:02.13 clocked in 2006 in the women's 400 free with a top-ranked time of 4:02.84. That performance far surpassed the previous world bests clocked last night at the Indianapolis Grand Prix, where Chloe Sutton (4:06.04), Katie Hoff (4:06.42) and Kate Ziegler (4:06.94) all went sub-4:07 to push to the top of the rankings. Jazmin Carlin moved to second in the world in the middle distance event with a second-place 4:05.51, while Keri-Anne Payne clocked a third-place time of 4:07.93.

Robbie Renwick won the first national title on offer with a 3:51.90 in the men's 400 free. That swim put him among the top five in the world this year. Ieuan Lloyd finished second in 3:52.62, while Joshua Walsh placed third in 3:52.74.

In semifinal action, Ellen Gandy clocked a 58.33 to lead the way in the women's 100 fly. That time nearly cleared her second-ranked season best of 58.23 from Sydney last month. Jemma Lowe (59.19), Jessica Sylvester (59.69) and Rachael Kelly (59.91) also qualified for the finale with sub-1:00 times. Antony James led the way in the men's 50 fly semis with a 24.44. James Doolan (24.45) and Jack Marriott (24.62) qualified second and third.

Michael Jamieson paced the men's 100 breast semis with a 1:01.60, while Andrew Willis qualified second in 1:02.14. Kristopher Gilchrist placed third in semis with a 1:02.15. Hannah Miley clocked a 2:13.83 for the top seed, while Sophie Smith took second with a 2:14.61.

In multi-disability events, Natalie Massey was listed first in the women's 200 free with a 2:17.92, while Daniel Pepper was listed first in the men's 200 free with a 2:05.23.
