Western Athletic Conference Championships: Day Three

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, February 24. SAN Jose State extended its lead at the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships being held at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas. The Spartans lead Northern Arizona by 64 points with one day of competition remaining.

In Friday's finals, Northern Arizona sophomores Rachel Palmer and Jordan Burnes were 1-2 in the 400-yard individual medley. Palmer won with an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:18.46 while Burnes clocked in at 4:20.35 just ahead of last year's winner, New Mexico State's Tricia Kiss (4:20.70).

Hawaii freshman Sofija Djelic swam an NCAA provisional time of 54.34 to win the 100 butterfly. San Jose State took the next three spots led by freshman Michaela McLean (55.43), Heather Denman (55.54) and Ashlyn Acosta (55.88).

Another freshman won the next race as New Mexico State's Aliena Schmidtke took the gold in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.38. Nevada's Mengjiao Mi was second (1:46.76) while Northern Arizona's Emma Lowther was third (1:48.26). All three swam NCAA provisional times.

San Jose State senior Kirsten Trammell won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.60, just ahead of her teammate Darcie Anderson (1:01.65). New Mexico State's Jessica Legge earned the bronze with a time of 1:02.06. All three times were NCAA consideration cuts.

Hawaii senior Christa Prior won the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.07. Northern Arizona's Fi Connell finished second for the second straight year with a time of 54.45. San Jose State's Heather Denman again medaled after a third place finish with a time of 54.67. All three medalists swam NCAA provisional times.

Hawaii's Daniella Nero won the gold on the three-meter board with a score of 343.75. Nevada's Grace Huang was second for the second straight year with 331.20 points followed by Fresno State's Hannah Prigge (317.05).

In the final event of the evening, the San Jose State team of Heather Denman, Kirsten Trammell, Ashlyn Acosta and Marisa Dewames won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:39.45. Northern Arizona was second (3:41.74), while Hawaii placed third for the second straight year (3:42.70).

After three days of competition, San Jose State leads with 475 points, while Northern Arizona is second with 411. Hawaii is third with 398 points, followed by New Mexico State with 289, Nevada (255), Idaho (244), Fresno State (213) and North Dakota (139).

Action concludes tomorrow at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center with the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 3-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 11:00 a.m., the first two heats of the 1650 free begin at 4:30 p.m. and the finals start at 6:30 p.m.
