North Coast Athletic Conference Championships: Day Three

CANTON, Ohio, February 17. THE Denison University men's and women's swimming & diving squads maintained their leads at the top of the leaderboard at the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Swimming & Diving Championships after the second full day of competition. The Big Red men won five events and also posted 11 top-five finishes on the night to stand atop the standings with 1,205 points, while the DU women have accumulated 1,093 points after winning four events and posting nine top-five finishes on Friday evening.
On the men's side, Kenyon closed the gap with DU and sits in second with 1,087 points, followed by DePauw (673), Wabash (445), Allegheny (409), Oberlin (374), Wooster (359), Wittenberg (342), Ohio Wesleyan (293) and Hiram (142). The Ladies also remain in second with 1,028 points, followed by Wooster (616), Wittenberg (552), DePauw (545), Allegheny (407), Oberlin (308), Ohio Wesleyan (235) and Hiram (148).

In the opening event of the night on the men's side, the Lords touched the wall first in the 200 medley relay in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:30.65, while Denison also reached NCAA 'A' cut standards after finishing second in the event with a time of 1:30.73. The Lords kept their momentum going into the 400 IM as sophomore Andrew Chevalier (Golden, CO/Home Schooled) set the NCAC meet record and qualified for the national championship after touching first with a time of 3:54.51, while Kenyon senior Joey Pysnik (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) also met NCAA 'A' cut standards in the event with a time of 3:56.99. The Lords again found themselves in the winners circle in the 100 butterfly as senior David Somers (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) reached the wall first in an NCAA 'A' cut time of 49.28. Denison earned its first victory of the evening in the 200 freestyle with sophomore Sean Chabot's (Washington, MI/Stoney Creek) national qualifying swim of 1:39.16. Big Red senior Robert Barry (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's School), who set the NCAC record in the 100 backstroke with his morning preliminary swim of 48.79, became the first four-time winner in the history of the NCAC in the even after touching the wall first in the finals with an NCAA 'A' cut time of 48.88. DU senior Mike Barczak (Bevery Hills, MI/Brother Rice) and junior Quinn Bartlett (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) also qualified for the national meet in the 100 back after tying for second with identical times of 49.39. Big Red junior diver Gabe Dixson (New Albany, OH/New Albany) completed the diving sweep for the second consecutive year at the NCAC Championship meet after winning the one-meter competition with an NCAA qualifying score of 545.80.

Kenyon junior Hannah Saiz (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) posted the first NCAA automatic qualifying time of the evening on the women's side after touching the wall first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.80, while Ladies' freshman Celia Oberholzer (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming) also qualified for the national meet after winning the 100 back in a time of 55.84. The Denison women closed out the evening with an NCAA qualifying swim in the 800 free relay after the quartet of junior Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, CO/Regis Jesuit), senior Emily Schroeder (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern), freshman Molly Willingham (Simpsonville, SC/Woodmont) and senior Hillary Callen (Oswego, NY/Oswego) touched the wall first in a time of 7:29.50.
