Michigan vs. Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Michigan, February 5. THE No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team capped the 2010-11 dual-meet season with an 167-125 win at Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Charles McCaffree Pool. The victory extends U-M's dual-meet winning streak over the Spartans to 33 seasons.

Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) was one of seven different Wolverines to win an individual event, taking home the 100-yard backstroke (49.30) and the 50-yard freestyle (20.94).

Senior Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) narrowly missed the top of the podium twice, touching the wall in the 50-yard freestyle one-hundredth of a second off Ortiz's pace. Four events earlier, he posted a consideration time in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.37), missing out on first place by three-hundredths of a second.

Michigan continued its dominance in the 100-yard butterfly with sophomore Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison) extending Michigan's winning streak to five consecutive races, meeting the NCAA `B' standard in the process (48.16).

Freshman John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy Prep) and senior Jared Miller (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) helped the Wolverines sweep the individual medley, winning the 200-yard and 400-yard events, respectively. Freshmen Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School) and Ryutaro Kamiya (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) each earned first-place finishes in the final dual meet of their rookie campaigns.

The Maize and Blue also swept the both relays, finishing first on pool records in the 200-yard medley relay (1:29.75) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.05). The quartet of Ortiz, Kennedy, Fletcher and sophomore Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) earned an NCAA consideration time in the medley relay. Meanwhile, the freestyle foursome of Ortiz, Gregg, junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) and Kennedy smashed the year-old pool record by more than a second.

Michigan will send a seven-member contingent to take part in the OSU Winter Invitational (Fri-Sat., Feb. 12-13) in Columbus, Ohio. The remainder of the squad will begin final preparations for the Big Ten Championships, which take place Feb. 23-26 in Minneapolis, Minn.
