Carnegie Mellon vs. Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio, January 29. DENISON senior Ksenia Golovkina (Newton, Mass./Newton South) set two Gregory Pool records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, highlighting nine DU victories which resulted in a 149-123 win over No. 14 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon.

Golovkina, who was swimming the final home meet of her career, set her first pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.49. She broke her own record in the event, topping her former Gregory Pool best time of 1:05.07 set in 2010. Later in the meet she posted a time of 2:21.42 in the 200 breaststroke which shattered a 10-year old pool record held by seven-time All-American and 2001 alum, Katie Sprague, by more than two seconds. Both times were strong NCAA provisional qualifying times for the 13-time All-American, Golovkina.

In other action, Golovkina was also a part of the wining 200 medley relay team along with Maddie Armitage (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Morgan Nuess (Kettering, Ohio/Dayton Christian) and Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit). That group posted a solid 'B' cut time of 1:45.93 in the event.

Swanson would also go on to post wins in the 100 free and 200 free. In the 100 free her 52.26 marked her second-fastest time of the season. It was only topped by her 'A' cut, 51.18 performance at the Miami Invitational in December. In the 200 freestyle Swanson checked in at 1:52.85.

Other multiple winners included Nuess who picked up a win in the 50 freestyle to go along with her 200 medley relay victory. In the 50 free she touched in 24.22.

Laurel Brabson (Boonsboro, Md./Boonsboro) posted a season-best time of 2:07.46 in the 200 butterfly to reach an NCAA provisional time. In the 200 backstroke Emily Schroeder (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) logged a time of 2:05.36 to win the even and in the 1000 freestyle, Hilary Callen (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) took the top spot with a time of 10:20.06.

The victory marked the seventh dual meet win of the season for the No. 3 ranked Denison Big Red. It also marked their third win of the season against a nationally ranked opponent (Nov. 6 vs. #2 Kenyon and Jan. 22 vs. #15 Grove City). This is the final warm-up before the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championship on Feb. 10-12 from Canton, Ohio. Denison University will serve as the host of this year's conference championship from C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The No. 3 Denison men's swimmers and divers closed out their 2010-11 home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 152-125 victory over No. 10 Carnegie Mellon from Gregory Pool. The Big Red posted nine wins en route to their sixth dual meet victory of the season.

This marked Denison's second-straight Saturday dual meet against a nationally ranked opponent. Last week they dispatched No. 15 Grove City 169-124. This afternoon, DU was led by junior Mike DeSantis (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) who posted a strong NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100 backstroke, touching in 50.63 seconds.

Senior Kyle Chabot (Washington, Mich./Stoney Creek) was one of seven seniors who competed for the Big Red against the Tartans. He was a winner in the 200 butterfly with a time of :55.38 and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

Other seniors to reach the winners podium were Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), Jake Lewing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Cody Smith (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford). Barczak took the top-spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.88 seconds. Lewing won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.39 and Cody Smith won the one-meter dive with a score of 312.38. Lewing and Barczak were also joined by Chabot and Robert Barry on the 200 medley relay which posted a winning time of 1:34.34.

Other winners for DU included Quinn Bartlett's (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) 21.59 second performance in the 50 freestyle. First-year Al Weik (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) continued his stranglehold on the distance freestyle events with a 9:26.41 in the 1000 free and Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was the winner in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.42.

This meet marked Denison's final test before they attempt to defend their crown at the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship in Canton, Ohio on Feb. 10-12, 2011. Denison University will serve as the host for the three-day championship from C.T. Branin Natatorium.
