Meanwhile, Olympic silver medalist Eamon Sullivan drew another injury. Sullivan could not fight off an ankle injury he sustained during a training camp in Mexico three weeks ago. In the camp in San Luis Potosi, Sullivan hit his ankle on the bottom of the pool, which wound up causing a small fracture according to Swimming Australia.

"It's disappointing to be injured at this time of the year, January is just not a good month for me," Sullivan told Swimming Australia. "I guess the one positive I can take out of the injury is that I managed to train well for three weeks over there at altitude with the injury, but having only just found out that it's actually fractured, I've decided to withdraw from the rest of this series."

At the end of the day, Team O'Neill led the cumulative scoring with a combined team time of 43:27.87.

Team times at the end of Day 1
Team O'Neill – 43:27.87
Team Klim – 43:39.20
Team Welsh – 43:47.09
Team Frame – 43:56.55
