Big Ten Quad

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 28. THE No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won both relay events, two individual races and both springboard dives to lead all three teams following the first day of competition on Friday (Jan. 28) at a Big Ten quad meet at Canham Natatorium. U-M sits ahead of No. 11-ranked Ohio State, 103-77, Northwestern, 151-35, and Penn State, 146-40.

Michigan swept the podium on the three-meter springboard, with freshman Jack Lee (North Egremont, Mass./Berkshire School) posting a score of 310.30 to lead the U-M trio. Junior Chris Morrison (Fenton, Mich./Fenton), who finished second in the three-meter, was the top scorer off the one-meter, tallying a career-high 315.65 points.

Junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) continued his hot streak in the 200-yard butterfly, using an NCAA consideration time of 1:45.74 to pace the field. Meanwhile, sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) was fastest to the wall in the freestyle sprint, touching the pad in 20.46.

Michigan racked up points in the 200-yard freestyle with second through fourth-place finishes from freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), freshman Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and Madwed, respectively.

The Maize and Blue won the 400-yard medley relay on a season-best time of 3:15.54 to open the meet. In the evening's final event, Michigan held off a late surge by Ohio State in the 400-yard freestyle relay to win by less than a second with an NCAA `B' time of 2:58.24.

The four teams will be back in the pool Saturday morning (Jan. 28) at 11 a.m. inside Canham Natatorium. The Maize and Blue will recognize its seniors prior to the meet.
