Boise State vs. Washington State

PULLMAN, Washington, January 21. BOISE State women's swimming and diving earned its second victory against a Pacific-10 Conference opponent in school history, beating Washington State, 143-119, Friday, at Gibb Pool.

Boise State jumped out to a quick lead with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000-yard freestyle. After Washington State inched closer throughout the meet, the Broncos clinched the victory with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yard individual medley and a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

"We are excited about tonight's performance," said head coach Kristin Hill. "We came away with a victory last year against WSU at home, but to be able to come to Pullman and win is a great accomplishment for this program."

Sophomore Jennifer Cahill led the Bronco sweep in the 1000-yard freestyle, with freshmen Rachel Heaney and Brooke Balogh close behind. Balogh's time of 10:40.38 is a career best.

Sophomore Christine Raininger posted the ninth-fastest time in school history to win the 400 IM.

Junior Amber Boucher won two individual events and helped the Broncos win both relay events. Boucher won the 100-yard butterfly 54.88, setting a pool record. It is also the sixth-fastest time at Boise State, and gives her the 10 best times in program history. She also won the 50-yard freestyle by nearly a full second with the 10th-fastest time in school history.

Junior Stephanie North also claimed a pair of individual wins against the Cougars and anchored each winning relay team. North won the 200- and 100-yard freestyle events with impressive finishing splits. In the 200 she swam the final 50 yards more than a second faster than the leader at the three-quarter mark to win. In the 100, she led wire to wire but increased her lead the entire race.

Senior Denise Green turned in a fast time in the 500-yard freestyle, but her blazing final 50 yards was not quite enough to chase down Jennifer Dean of WSU. Green touched the wall two one-hundredths of a second behind Dean, but was followed by Cahill as the Broncos took second and third in the event.

Heaney earned a win in the 200-yard butterfly with the No. 7 time in school history.

The Broncos also picked up a strong team effort in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Morgan McLain scored a second-place finish with sophomore Lily Donohue and junior Kelsy Diener following immediately behind her.

Both relay teams posted top-10 all-time marks. The 200-yard medley ranked No. 6, and the 400-yard freestyle ranked No. 5.

"It was a fun competition," Hill said. "WSU was ready to race and our team approached it with the right mentality. It allowed us to be fast enough for the win."

The Broncos return to action Saturday to take on in-state rival Idaho. The meet at the UI Swim Center in Moscow, Idaho, begins at 11 a.m. (PT).

"It sounds like Idaho is ready to race and we are looking forward to the competition," said Hill.
