Saint Louis, Valparaiso vs. IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, January 21. COMPETING in its final home meet prior to hosting the 2011 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, the IUPUI men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined for nine victories, including a new school-record set by Chen Ni in the 1-meter dive.

The men's team ended up splitting decisions with a win over Valparaiso (63.0 -42.0) and a loss to Saint Louis (41.0 – 72.0), while the women's team earned victories over the Crusaders (67.5 – 37.5) and Billikens (59.0 – 54.0).

Ni captured two of the victories for the women's team sweeping the 1- and 3-meter dives. Ni's score of 307.57 destroyed her previous 1-meter record by more than 20 points, while her 3-meter mark of 302.77 was the fourth-best mark in her career in the event and the fourth-best mark in school history.

Outside of Ni's dominance in the diving events, one of the more impressive performances came from Tyler McGowan. In the 40 lengths comprising the 1000 freestyle, McGowan finished in second place by just two seconds, but his time of 9:53.93 slotted him into the No. 2 spot in the school record books, just 1.6 seconds off Taylor Williamson's record-setting mark during the 2004-05 season.

Katelyn Cato, Tori Taylor, Lizzie Bourgeois, and Lindsey Hurst comprised the other five victories for the women's team. The quartet first triumphed in the 200 medley relay touching the wall in 1:52.31, the 11th-best mark in school history before Cato, Hurst, and Bourgeois gained wins in individual events.

Cato supplanted herself onto two of IUPUI's career record charts in the 100 backstroke and the 200 freestyle. Cato picked up first-place honors in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.55, the 12th-best time in the event in program history. She also moved into ninth on the school charts in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.49, which garnered second-place honors in the event.

Hurst was a two-time winner in the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Bourgeois added top honors in the 100 butterfly.

Michael Steurer was responsible for both of the victories on the men's side winning both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Steurer's best effort came in the 200 freestyle, where his winning time of 1:45.48 was the fourth-best time in program history. Steurer then won the 100 backstroke in a time of 53.81.

Outside of Steurer, Kyle Whitaker led a 2-3 finish in the 200 individual medley with McGowan, timing in at 2:02.09 and 2:02.35, respectively. Another 2-3 finish came in the 100 freestyle, where Luke Green and Josh Davis secured two of the top three spots with times of 49.92 and 50.01.

Rounding out the meet, Mitchell Gauger claimed a pair of second-place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter dives with scores of 288.75 and 289.57, respectively.

The Jags are back in action next weekend when they travel to Eastern Illinois and Valparaiso for two dual meets. IUPUI first travels to Charleston, Ill., to face Eastern Illinois on Friday, Jan. 28, before rounding out the weekend at Valparaiso on Saturday, Jan. 29.
