Utah vs. TCU

FORT WORTH, TCU's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each picked up conference victories Saturday afternoon inside the TCU University Rec Center Natatorium.

The men recorded a 171-123 win, while the Horned Frog women picked up a 166-131 triumph. TCU's men's squad improved to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in Mountain West Conference action. The women improved to 3-3 overall, 3-3 MWC.

"These are big wins for both of our squads," TCU coach Richard Sybesma said. "This will give us a lot of confidence and momentum while we build toward the conference meet."

The Horned Frog men won 12 of the 16 events, anchored by freshman Michael Franz's wins in the 500-freestyle, 1000-freestyle and 400-individual medley. The Carmichael, Calif., native improved his season wins total to six.

Franz cruised in all three of his wins, notching a winning time of 9:37.23 in the 1000-freestyle, the meet's second event. In the 500-freestyle, Franz won by nearly seven seconds, clocking a 4:38.40. His 400-individual medley winning time was 4:02.71.

Junior wins leader Edgar Crespo racked up two more wins on the afternoon for the Frogs. The Panama City, Panama, native won the 100-breaststroke with a 56.93 and the 200-breaststroke with a 2:05.08, despite spending much of the week training out of the water due to a lower-leg issue.

In the air, senior Kyle Callens shined again, continuing his hot start to 2011. The Deer Park, Texas, native broke his own school record in the 1-meter springboard when he blistered the competition with a score of 360.98.

The Frogs also got two wins from senior Jeff Gettel, who won the 100-backstroke with a 51.48 and the 200-backstroke with a 1:51.76.

Other winners were freshman Ryker Saunders in the 200-butterfly, sophomore Devin Price in the 50-freestyle, junior Laszlo Gyurko in the 100-freestyle and TCU's 400-medley relay team of Gyurko, Crespo, Edgar Peyro and Price.

The TCU women earned their first win over Utah in the final meeting between the two schools as members of the Mountain West Conference. Senior Maria Paula Alvarez upped her season wins total to nine with victories in the 200-freestyle and 500-freestyle.

After being out-touched in both events a week ago against UNLV, Alvarez returned the favor in the 200-freestyle when she clocked a 1:51.64 to win by four-hundreths of a second. The Cali, Colombia, native won the 500-free in 5:04.50 after controlling the race from its beginning.

Freshman Michelle Fleming continued her recent run of success in the breaststroke, winning the 100-breast and 200-breast. She has five wins on the year. Her 100-breast winning time was 1:07.74, while she touched the wall in 2:24.11 for the 200-breast.

The Frog women also got into the record books during Saturday's meet. Freshman Amanda Vincent won the 200-butterfly with a 2:02.69. That time is the fifth-fastest in TCU history.

TCU also got wins from Ashley Bolin in the 1000-freestyle (10:30.65), Sabine Rasch in the 50-freestyle (23.38), Jennifer Oster in the 200-backstroke (2:06.37) and Emily-Rose Creighton in the 400-individual medley (4:32.15).

Prior to the meet, Sybesma was honored for his 400th-career dual-meet win that came on Nov. 19, 2010 at Wyoming. TCU Associate Athletics Director Jack Hesselbrock presented Sybesma with a commemorative plaque.

Also in attendance was TCU alumnus Gregg Troy, who is currently the head swimming and diving coach at Florida. Troy will coach the 2012 United States Olympic swimming teams.
