Niagara vs. Binghamton

VESTAL, New York, January 14. THE Binghamton University swimming and diving program returned to the pool Friday afternoon, sweeping Niagara University at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. The women won 140-94 while the men earned a 125-107 victory in the 11-event meet. The Bearcat women improved its record to 4-1 on the season, as the men moved above .500 at 3-2.

After finishing the first half of the season with a home loss to Cornell, both squads regained focus and fired off the starting blocks against Niagara. The men and women both won the first event of the meet, the 400 medley relay, in impressive fashion. The foursome of Melissa Lindahl, Danielle Gallo, Brittany Detlef and Olivia Baczek won in a time of 4:08.50. On the men's side, Mark Cereste, Andrew Ellman, Aaron Budner and Kevin Kearney touched first in a time of 3:44.32.

Leading the women to victory were sophomores Tiffany Siu and Karissa Gorman. Siu placed first in the 200 and 500 free with times of 1:56.38 and 5:05.03, respectively. Gorman, a transfer from Duquesne, earned her first victories of her short BU career by touching first in the 1000 free (10:52.68) and 200 breast (2:31.40).

Senior Jordyn Kline and junior Maria Mazzoni also swam to their first wins of the season, winning the 200 back (2:15.40) and 200 fly (2:15.98), respectively. Mazzoni added to her day placing second behind Gorman in the 1000 free, giving BU the one-two finish. Seniors Amanda Ciccone and Brittany Detlef rounded out the Bearcat victories in the individual swimming events. Ciccone won the 200 IM in a time of 2:10.91 while Detlef took first in the 50 free with a time of 26.10.

On the boards for BU, senior Liz Esposito won the meter board with a score of 196.88. Junior Morgan Neal placed first in the three-meter board with a score of 219.30. The women finished the day by winning the 200 free relay. The combination of Ciccone, Mazzoni, Baczek and Caitlin Nelson won in a time of 1:40.65.

Junior Nolan Slesnick lead the men to victory by winning the 200 free (1:49.16) and 200 fly (2:00.07), while swimming a leg in the first place 200 free relay team. Senior leadership was also a large contributor to the Bearcat win. Seniors Jason Chen, Phil Dzieniszewski and Dan Feeley all touched first during the meet. Chen won the 200 IM (1:55.47), Dzieniszewski won the 100 free (49.83) and Feeley won the 500 free (4:59.21).

Sophomore Josh Saccurato had a dual-victory day, winning the 200 back and breast. Saccurato finished the 200 back with a time of 1:58.79 and the 200 breast in a time of 2:14.09. Freshman John Pangal earned his first collegiate victory, winning the 1000 free with a time of 10:18.30.

Anthony Foiles finished second on the three-meter board while Justin Mattison took third on the meter board. Like the women, the men finished with a win in the 200 free relay. The foursome of Ed Hausmann, Devon Byrt, Slesnick and Dzieniszewski won in a time of 1:24.81.

The swimming and diving program has a quick turnaround, traveling to Buffalo, N.Y. tomorrow to take on the University at Buffalo. It will be the first of two weekends where the Bearcats will compete in two dual meets in two days. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
