Scottish Short Course Championships: Hannah Miley Wins Four, Robbie Renwick Doubles

GLASGOW, Scotland, January 7. EUROPEAN and Commonwealth champion Hannah Miley was the star of the first night of short course meters racing at the British Gas Short Course Championships.

Miley started her evening with a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:08.78, just behind Kathryn Johnstone's 1:08.41. In third place was Corrie Scott with a 1:11.26.

Miley's second event of the day resulted in her first of three wins tonight. She posted a 2:12.13 in the 200 IM, well ahead of second-place finisher Emily Jones' 2:15.93 and Jennifer Dobson's 2:16.52, who finished third.

Miley was back for more in the 200 fly, winning the event in 2:12.58. Again, she distanced herself from the pack, with silver medalist Nadia Edling finishing second in 2:17.33. Lucy Sanderson rounded out the podium with a 2:18.20.

Miley wrapped up her evening with a win in the 100 freestyle, posting a 55.95. She was able to pass Sara Hamilton in the final 50 meters for the win, with Hamilton finishing in 56.26. Sarah Eaglesham was third in 57.28.

In other women's events tonight, Fiona Donnelly won the 800 freestyle in 8:42.66, with Catherine Marcroft placing second in 8:51.94. Third place went to Camilla Hattersley with her 8:58.26.

Charlotte McKenzie won the 50 backstroke in 28.97. Donnelly showed some sprinting prowess after her distance free victory, placing second in 29.11. Eaglesham was third in 29.59.

Edinburgh University won the women's 200 freestyle relay in 1:55.79, with East Lothian well back in second with a 2:01.80. Warrender was third with a 2:02.37.

On the men's side, Robbie Renwick, the 2010 Commonwealth Games champion in the 200 freestyle, won two events tonight. His first came in the 50 freestyle, which he won in 22.44 over Richard Shafers' time of 23.17. Third place in the sprint event went to Rory Lamont in 23.22.

Renwick would return later in the session to take the 400 free handily in 3:47.46. Joshua Walsh led for 250 meters before fading to second place, finishing in 3:50.36. Lewis Smith was third in 3:51.26.

Ryan Bennett won the 200 back going away with a 1:55.75, holding off a challenge from Craig McNally, who posted a 1:57.37. Ross Muir rounded out the podium with a 2:01.65.

Andrew Mayor and Ian Macmillan battled for the win in the 100 fly, with Mayor getting to the wall first in 54.22. Macmillan was second in 54.27. In third was Daniel Scott with a 55.42.

Douglas Scott was the winner of the 50 breaststroke, taking the title in 28.07. Jamie Graham was second in 28.70, with Craig Benson grabbing third with a time of 28.77.

Lewis Smith denied Douglas Scott a second victory tonight by taking the 100 IM with a 56.47 over Scott's 56.57. James Thomson was third in 57.03.

Glasgow won the men's 200 free relay with a 1:41.44 over Edinburg University's 1:42.96. Third place went to Warrender with a 1:43.85.
