Torrey Pines and Valhalla Take CIF-San Diego High School Titles

SAN DIEGO. TORREY PINES' girls and Valhalla's boys were the queens and kings of the pool at the CIF-San Diego Section Championships on May 15.

Torrey Pines splashed to a resounding 253-173 win over Mount Carmel while Valhalla won a close 199-177 win over Fallbrook.

Torrey Pines was led by double record-setting senior Lisa Morelli, who scored wins and section standards in the 100 fly (56.31) and 100 back (56.95) and also also led off the winning 200 medley relay. Both of Morelli's winning swims are automatic All-America cuts.

Teammate Valerie Tukey, a highly promising sophomore, scored a double of her, winning the 100-200 frees in 52.42-1:51.50. She also led off the 200 free relay in 24.91 and her team clocked a swift 1:40.07 for the win — just .30 off Mount Carmel's meet record 1:39.77 from 1996.

Another super sophomore was Poway's Becky Kreutzjans, who scored a pair of wins in the 200 IM (2:05.21) and 500 free (4:52.63). Her IM win was just over a second off the meet record of 2:04.09 and makes the automatic
All-America cut. Her 500 makes consideration.

In the 100 breast Mount Carmel's Kristen Rasmuson won a close 1:04.08-1:04.88 victory over Torrey Pines' Nikoll Julien, with both swimmers making the automatic All-America cut of 1:04.92.

Rasmusson also anchored Mount Carmel's winning 400 free relay with a 54.69 swim — not bad for a breaststroker!

Rancho Buena Vista, although only finishing eighth overall, was dominant in diving, sweeping the top three places, with junior Lauren Formicola winning
a squeaker over Chelsea Flemmer, 438.00-437.00. Mellisa Kennedy (386.80) took the bronze.

Valhalla, led by senior Will McLaughlin (200 free-100 fly champ), parlayed another win in the 500 free and a pair of relay titles to clinch its team title.

McLaughlin's 200 win was done in 1:41.67, with Fallbrook's David Brown (1:42.67) runner-up. In the 100 fly, McLaughlin's 49.49 blasted the old section record of 50.53 by Hilltop's Jacob Prairie and Rancho Buena Vista's Quentin Byma from 1999. The time is also an automatic All-America swim and among the fastest 100 flys of the season.

The Valhalla senior also swam the fly leg on the winning 200 medley relay (24.35) and his younger brother Clint — a 10th-grader — anchored in 23.45.

Mount Carmel's Ryan Karlson clocked 20.90 in the 50 free to set the meet's other individual record, breaking the old mark of 20.92 from 1994.

Valhalla junior Adam Dole, third in the 200 free, moved up a couple of notches to the top of the podium in the 500 with an All-America consideration time of 4:38.42. The automatic cut is 4:33.91 and the section
record is a fast 4:21.10 by San Marcos' Tim Siciliano from 1998.

And where is Mr. Siciliano these days? Ann Arbor, Michigan, swimming for Coach Jon Urbancek's Michigan Wolverines. At this year's NCAAs Siciliano won the 400 IM in 3:40+ — not far off former Wolverine Tom Dolan's American-NCAA record of 3:38+ from six years ago.
