Thorpe, Popov Roll On , Klochkova Upset at Monaco Meet

MONACO, June 13. AUSTRALIA'S Ian Thorpe missed breaking his own world record in the 200 meter freestyle but still won handily with a time, 1:45.75, only he and Holland's Pieter van den Hoogenband have ever bettered on the second day of the two-day Monaco stop in the Mare Nostrum tour today.

Meanwhile, the Czar – Alexander Popov – bounced back from an upset defeat in the 100 meters yesterday to take the 50 meter freestyle match race in 21.91 seconds, lowering his own world's best time for the year by a full two-tenths of a second.

Another Olympic champion, Lars Frolander of Sweden, also emerged a winner, taking the 100m butterfly in
52.84 seconds, a touch ahead of Germany's Thomas Rupprath, at 52.90.

A third 2000 Olympic gold medalist, Ukraine's Yana Klochkova, unexpectedly found herself on the second rung of the victory platform. Chinese newcomer Liang Shuang clocked 2:15.42 to take the women's 200m individual medley, handily defeating Klochkova, whose 2:16.79 was just enough to edge Canada's Marianne Limpert for the silver medal. Earlier, Klochkova had won the 200m butterfly in impressive style, touching in 2:11.00, more than two seconds ahead of South Africa's mandy Loots.

Many in the crowd were disappointed when Thorpe did not challenge his own world record of 1:44.69 in the 200m free, especially after he had swum a spectacular 400 meters yesterday. Thorpe, however, was not among them.

"People always expect a lot from me but I'm just happy with what I did today. At Canet, I swam extremely fast but it is not easy to be at my best mentally and physically every race," Thorpe said.

The Australian clocked 1:44.97 – the second fastest 200 meters ever – last week in Canet.

"I'm preparing for the World Championships and I have a lot of homework to do. I'm just happy to swim and to build up some experience," he said.

Other Men's Events

In other events, the Czech Republic's Daniel Malek took a close 100m breaststroke race in 1:02.01, edging Ukraine's Oleg Lisagor and Canada's Morgan Knabe.

Australia's Ray Hass was the upset winner in the 200m backstroke, out-reaching Croatia's Gordan Kozulj who yesterday upset world record-holder Lenny Krayzelburg to win the 100 back. Hass clocked 2:01.68 to Kozulj's 2:01.71 with Japan's Takashi Takeuchi right behind in 2:01.78.

Australia scored its third victory of the night when Grant McGregor touched first in the 400 IM in 4:21.78.

Other Women's Events
Two-time American Olympian Amanda Beard was upset in the 200 meter breaststroke by another Chinese newcomer, Luo Nan, 2:27.07 to 2:28.04.

In an all-Scandinavian finish, Sweden's Johanna Sjoberg touched first in the 100m free, 56.20, to Denmark's Mette Jacobsen's 56.66. Interestingly, both women are better known for their fly exploits.

Spain's Nina Zhivanevskaya took the 100m backstroke by almost a second, clocking 1:01.94 to the 1:02.80 turned in by China's Li Yuanqing.

Finally, a slow 400 meter freestyle was won by the Czech Republic's Jana Pechanova in 4:16.01.

50 Meter Match Races
The 50s were all swum as match races, with prelims, quarter-finals, semi-finals and head-to-head finals. Alex Popov's 21.91 for the 50 free was definitely the highlight of the sprint events, but other sprint 50s saw some solid performances.

World record-holder Lenny Krayzelburg passed on the 200, but won the 50 in 25.74 seconds, after swimming 25.72 in the semis.

Oleg Lisagor, Ukraine, took the 50 breast in a solid 27.92, to add to his 100 meter victory.

Olympic champion Lars Frolander, Sweden, completed a three-win meet by taking the 50m fly in 23.85 seconds, one-tenth faster than Finland's Jere Hard.

Another Swede, Johanna Sjoberg, won the women's 50m free to go with her 100 meter victory. The 23 year-old clocked 25.76 seconds. Sjoberg came back later to win the 50 fly in 27.54, with South Africa's Mandy Loots second in 27.81.

Germany's Sandra Volker had surprisingly little difficulty in disposing of Nine Zhivanevskaia, 28.30 to 29.26 to take the 50m backstroke. Volker's time was only five-hundredths of a second slower than the world record she set one year ago. It seems a sure bet that that record will fall at next month's World Championships.

The women's 50 breast saw the day's closest race as South Africa's Sarah Poewe just beat America's Amanda Beard to the wall, 3.89 to 31.90.
