DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 17. THE finale of the women's 50 fly proved to be exciting as Sweden's Therese Alshammar touched out Australia's Felicity Galvez in the sprint fly event at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Alshammar touched out Galvez, 24.87 to 24.90, for the gold medal. Both swims clipped Alshammar's meet record of 25.19 set earlier in the meet which also stood as the top-ranked time in the world heading into this race. Both swimmers missed national records in the event with Alshammar missing her standard of 24.38 set Nov. 2009, while Galvez came up short of Marieke Guehrer's Aussie mark of 24.69 also from Nov. 2009.

Denmark's Jeanette Ottesen snatched the bronze medal with a time of 25.24, just missing her national record of 25.18 from Nov. 2009 as well.

China's Lu Ying (25.34), The Netherlands' Inge Dekker (25.48), Estonia's Triin Aljand (25.61), USA's Christine Magnuson (25.74) and Guehrer (25.96) made up the rest of the finale. Lu downed the Chinese record of 25.89 set by Jiao Liuyang in February.
