NC State Signs Two Divers

RALEIGH, North Carolina, December 9. NC State swimming and diving head coach Brooks Teal announced today the signing of two student-athletes to the men's and women's diving program. Rachel Mumma and Ryan Smith will both join the Wolfpack as true freshmen in 2011-12.

"Rachel and Ryan are both really talented student-athletes," said Wolfpack head diving coach Jenny Keim Johansen. "Both add depth to our diving corps and, more importantly, can compete and score for us right away. We are really excited about what they will bring to our program."

Mumma, out of Harrisburg, Pa., is a three-time All-America selection and a 2010 Speedo National qualifier on all three boards. Having competed with the Club-Soaring Eagles Dive Club, Mumma placed second overall in the state championships in 2010.

"Rachel is extremely talented and will compete immediately for us in all three events," said Johansen. "It's going to be exciting to watch her join our program, become immersed in our training and really continue to take off. She will be a consistent scorer for us."

Smith, a native of Deer Park, Texas, has enjoyed tremendous success on all three boards. A four-time USA Diving junior national qualifier in all events, he was a 2010 NISCA All-America selection. Smith is also a three-time all-state selection, and was named 2010 UIL Texas State 5A Region VI Diver of the Year. Smith chose NC State over Arizona, Auburn, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Wyoming, and will study biology in Raleigh.

"Ryan has been to junior nationals several times on all three events, so he will be able to compete for us immediately all around," said Johansen. "We know that he will be able to score and bring a lot of points our way."
