Brazilian Short Course Championships: Cesar Cielo Cruises to 100 Free Victory

SAO PAOLO, Brazil, December 2. THE first day of racing came to a close with some swift swimming at the Brazilian Short Course Championships held in Sao Paolo.

Although he already has a top-ranked 45.87 to his credit this year from the Jose Finkel Trophy in September, Cesar Cielo won the men's 100 free with a meet-record time of 46.87. Andre Daudt finished second in 48.42, while Nicholas Dos Santos rounded out the top three in 48.58.

Guilherme Guido downed the meet record in the men's 50 back during prelims with a 23.88. He's been faster this year with a fourth-ranked 23.51 from the Beijing stop of the World Cup in October. Guido wound up cruising in the finale with a second-place 24.32 in an upset loss to Gabriel Mangabeira (24.27). Daniel Orzechowski grabbed third overall in 24.35.

Andre Schultz moved to 10th in the world in the men's 200 IM with a winning meet-record time of 1:55.65. Henrique Rodrigues placed second in 1:56.22, while Lucas Salatta finished third in 1:58.96.

Lucas Kanieski posted a meet-record time of 14:53.52 in the men's 1500 free, but has stopped the clock much faster this year with an eighth-ranked season best of 14:45.65 from the Singapore stop of the World Cup. Luiz Arapiraca took second in 15:17.88, while Caio Serebranik finished third in 15:20.26.

Tatiana Barbosa topped the women's 100 free in 53.55 after lowering the meet record with a 53.46 during prelims. Her prelim time moved her into a 15th-ranked tie with Hanna-Maria Seppala. Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato placed second in 54.88, while Alessandra Marchioro turned in a third-place 55.02.

Fabiola Molina set a meet record with a 27.44 during prelims to move to a 20th-ranked tie with Laura Letrari in the women's 50 back rankings. Molina returned in the finale with a winning time of 27.63. Natalia Diniz took second in 28.74, while Luiza Vieira touched third in 28.85.

Tatiane Sakemi won the women's 200 breast in 2:31.44, while Carolina Mussi touched out Juliana Marin for second, 2:31.95 to 2:31.97. Tales Cerdeira followed in the men's 200 breast with a meet-record 2:08.09 – well off his sixth-ranked season best of 2:05.61 from the Rio stop of the World Cup. Henrique Barbosa took second in 2:08.79, while Felipe Lima finished third in 2:09.70.

Joanna Maranhao captured the women's 200 IM title in 2:15.24 after setting the meet record with a 2:14.42 in prelims. Larissa Cieslak finished second in 2:16.01, while Julia Gerotto garnered third in 2:18.57.
