Simon Fraser vs. Seattle

SEATTLE, Washington, November 13. AT the first home meet against long-time rival Simon Fraser University, the Redhawk women swimmers came out on top 110-94, while the men's team lost with a final score of 105-97 that was determined in the final event at the Connolly Center on Saturday afternoon.

A strong effort by the women kept them just ahead of Simon Fraser. Junior Alexis Morehouse (Vancouver, Wash.) won the 200 IM in 2:10.63 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.27. Senior Kelsey Henan (Billings, Mont.) took the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.13 and junior Hayley Cobb (Irvine, Calif.) won the 500 freestyle in 5:07.57.

Multiple second and third place finishes across the board kept the women in front of SFU, including key places in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, to hold on to the win.

On the men's side, a 1-2 finish in the 200 IM kept the Redhawks close to the Clan. Junior James Gilmore (Eugene, Ore.) finished in 1:55.38 for first with sophomore Joe Wertz (Richland, Wash.) behind him with a time of 1:57.35. In a tight 100 butterfly race, sophomore Murray Longbotham (Mercer Island, Wash.) was just edged out by SFU's Ciaran McDonnell, finishing second in 52.63 behind McDonnell's 52.40. Longbotham also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:40.59. The Redhawk men also finished first and second in the 100 breaststroke, led by junior Erin Warren (Seattle, Wash.) with a time of 58.38 and followed by junior James White (El Cajon, Calif.) in 1:01.54.

The men were able to finish second (3:05.88) and third (3:17.04) in the 400 freestyle relay to stay close to Simon Fraser.

Seattle U will take off the next two weeks in order to prepare for meets against the University of Utah on December 3rd, followed by a meet against Brigham Young University on December 4th.
