Wyoming, North Dakota vs. Nebraska

LINCOLN, Nebraska, November 12. THE University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving team traveled to Lincoln, Neb., on Friday to take on the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers and the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.

The Cowgirls defeated both, beating the Huskers 177-123 and the Sioux 231-69. The Cowboys defeated the Fighting Sioux 194-98. The victory brings the Cowgirl's season record in duals to 5-0. The win brings the Cowboy's season dual record to 2-1. On the women's side, the loss drops NU to 2-2 on the season and drops the Fighting Sioux to 5-3 on the season. The loss drops the Fighting Sioux men's team to 2-5 overall.

Wyoming head coach Tom Johnson was very pleased with how his swimmers preformed, especially the performances of Lesley Young, Shelby Bull, Stephanie Vint and Kelsey Conci.

"This was a big win for us, I am really proud of how our women performed," Johnson said. "We started a little slow, but I thought we swam excellent.

"This is an historic day for Wyoming women's swimming, I don't think we have ever defeated a Big 12 team before."

The Cowgirls began the meet with a narrow win in the 200 medley relay over the Huskers, and did not look back. The UW `A' team consisting of Conci, Bull, Hartigan and Mackenzie Norlin won the 200 medley with a time of 1:46.05. The Cowgirls won a total of 11 events on the day with all of them being very impressive performances, according to Johnson. UW's Young swam two excellent breaststroke events, winning the 100 and 200. She won the 100 breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:03.65 and won the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.45. Young also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.31, just in front of her teammate Vint who swam a 2:06.62. Conci also had a big day for the Cowgirls, winning both the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. Conci won the 50 free by just two-hundredths of a second, with a time of 23.96, and then turned in a time of 56.61 in the 100 back. Bull also picked up two victories for the Cowgirls in the 100 and 200 free. Bull won the 100 free with a time of 51.80 and the 200 free with a time of 1:52.98.

In women's diving, UW's Allie Smith picked up victories on both the 1- and 3-meter springboards, with scores of 272.40 and 273.85, respectively.

"On the men's side, we really dominated; I was very pleased I felt the freshman really carried the day," Johnson said.

The Cowboys also came out and won in dominating fashion against the Fighting Sioux. The 'Pokes started with a 200 medley relay win from their `A' squad of Marshall Dilworth, Tyler Kybartas, Nate Ladner and Jeff Frey. Johnson was pleased with his freshmen swimmers today, most notably Jayce Calhoon, and Ethan Griffel. Calhoon won the 200 backstroke for the Cowboys with a time of 1:53.40. Griffel won the 200 free with a time of 1:40.99 and also won the 500 free with a time of 4:38.42. Cowboy Brandon Fischer picked up two wins for the Cowboys in the 100 and 200 breast, with times of 56.71 and 2:04.02, respectively. Cowboy Brett Henehan won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:47.03. Nathan Fuller picked up a win for UW in the 100 back swimming a 51.62.

On the men's diving side, UW's Kyle Bogner won both the 1- and 3-meter events with marks of 311.40 and 297.90 respectively.

Next up for the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be a home dual against the TCU Horned Frogs on Friday, Nov. 19 in Corbett Pool beginning at 5 p.m.
