Arizona vs. USC

LOS ANGELES, California, November 12. JUNIOR Katinka Hosszu set a pair of school records and won three races while seniors Lyndsay DePaul and Presley Bard, junior Victoria Ishimatsu and sophomore Haley Anderson were double winners as the No. 6 USC women's swimming and diving team defeated No. 7 Arizona, 190-110, on Friday (Nov. 12) in dual meet action. On the men's side, the No. 5 Wildcats defeated the No. 14 Trojans by the same score, 190-110.

USC's 200y medley relay of Bard, freshman Kasey Carlson, DePaul and junior Amada Smith got off the meet to a great start with a win in 1:40.85, edging a charging Wildcat team that was second in 1:41.18.

On the men's side, Arizona led 1-2-3 at the halfway point as well as at 150 before USC's A relay of sophomore Alex Lendrum, senior Dillon Connolly and freshmen Chase Bloch and Vladimir Morozov broke up the sweep to take third in 1:29.46 (NCAA `B' cut). The Wildcats' A team of Mitchell Friedemann, Kelley Wyman, Adam Small and Nick Popov won in 1:29.08 with the Wildcat B team in second (1:29.28).

The women's 1000y free was a battle of the Anderson sisters, USC's Haley against Arizona's Alyssa, swimming in adjacent lanes. Haley, whose distance prowess was sharpened over the summer as a member of the U.S. open water team, led from the start, opening up about a 10-yard lead midway through the race. By race's end, she glided to first in 9:46.43, her sister taking second in 9:55.62. Trojan senior Ellie Doran was third in 9:58.01.

In the men's 1000y free, the battle was between Trojan junior Richard Charlesworth, competing for the first time this season for USC, against Arizona's Matt Barber. Charlesworth pulled ahead gradually, his lead building with successive laps and he won unchallenged in 9:09.28 with Barber in second at 9:17.84. Trojan junior Julian Bonse claimed third in 9:27.20.
In the 200y free, Hosszu was in a tight race with Arizona sprint specialist Margo Geer, a freshman, holding a half body length lead through 150 yards. Geer closed slightly with about 25 to go, but Hosszu pulled away to win in 1:45.83 (NCAA `B' cut), breaking the pool record held by Stanford's Kate Dwelley (1:46.19, set in January). Geer finished second in 1:47.53 while Haley Anderson, less than 15 minutes after swimming 1,000 yards, took third in 1:49.37.

The men's 200y free was won by Arizona's Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or in 1:35.96, with Trojan freshman Dimitri Colupaev (1:38.64) and USC junior Patrick White (1:39.13) going 2-3.

Bard raced to a huge lead at the halfway point of the 100y back and built it to a body length at 75 yards. She extended the lead into the wall for a win in 53.80 as sophomore teammate Christel Simms was second in 55.83. Arizona's Hannah Ross was third (55.88). Arizona went 1-2 in the men's 100y back with Cory Chitwood (48.18) and Friedmann (49.09) with Lendrum in third (49.88).

In the 100y breast, Arizona's Ellyn Baumgardner led at the halfway point and took it into the wall in first at 1:02.04. Trojan junior Ania Kowalczyk charged from lane 8 to make it a race, finishing in 1:02.47 (a personal best) while Carlson was third in 1:03.44. Arizona's Kevin Munsch won the men's 100y breast (55.01) with teammate Carl Mickelson in second (55.02) while Trojan senior Dillon Connolly was third (55.58).

DePaul quickly took control of the women's 200y fly and was never challenged, winning in 1:54.90 in an NCAA `A' cut and less than a half second off of Natalie Coughlin's pool record (1:54.55.) Trojan junior teammate Tanya Krisman was second (1:58.13).

In the men's 200y fly, USC sophomore Clement Lefert edged in front after 50 yards in a tightly packed field and held a slim lead (0.20) at the halfway point over Arizona's A.J. Tipton. They turned tied at 1:18.62 with 50 to go, but Tipton surged to first in 1:45.81. Lefert finished second in 1:47.08 (USC season best, NCAA `B') while USC sophomore Justin DiFederico was third (1:49.49).

Geer won the 50y free in 22.83 with Bard in second (23.30) and Wildcat Grace Finnegan third (23.50). The men's 50 was won by Arizona's Adam Small (20.15), who edged Morozov (20.22).

Geer came back after the diving break to win the 100y free in 49.00 with Finnegan second (50.81) and Carlson third (50.89). In the men's 100y free, Shapiro Bar-Or won in 43.81, again slightly ahead of Morozov (43.90, USC season best, NCAA `B' cut).

After controlling the 100y back, Bard had equal success in the 200y back, winning in an easy 1:58.11 as freshman teammate Meghan Hawthorne took second in 1:59.80. Arizona's Ross was third (1:59.83). Chitwood joined Bard as a double winner in the back, taking the men's 200 in 1:44.58 while Lendrum was second (1:47.34, USC season best) and Arizona's Michael Sheppard was third (1:48.49).

Trojan sophomore Jessica Schmitt and Hosszu battled for first in the 200y breast midway through the race with Hosszu pulling away over the final 75 yards to win in 2:13.31 (season best, NCAA `B' cut). Schmitt was second in 2:15.18 while Arizona's Chelsey Salli was third (2:17.06). The Wildcats dominated the men's 200y breast, sweeping the top four spots, led by Munsch (1:58.33) and Mickelson (1:58.50).

The Anderson sisters battled again in the 500y free, Haley holding a slight edge through the first half of the race. She extended the lead to more than a body length after 350 yards and was racing against her own pool record of 4:45.15, just missing it with a 4:45.38 (USC season best, NCAA `B' cut). Her sister Alyssa was second (4:51.88) while Doran turned in a strong swim for third (4:52.30), just off an NCAA `B' cut.

Like Haley Anderson, Charlesworth earned another win in the 500y free (4:26.04, USC season best, NCAA `B' cut) ahead of Barber in second (4:29.09). White was third in 4:35.01.

DePaul joined the list of double winners after winning the 100y fly in 52.77, just off of her pool record (52.72) and a USC season best and NCAA `B' cut. Sophomore teammate Yumi So was second (54.02) with Krisman third (54.59), both in `B' cuts. In the men's 100y fly, Arizona's Tipton won in 47.78 with teammate Shapiro Bar-Or in second (47.91) and Lefert in third (48.62).

In the diving pool, Ishimatsu and junior Harrison Jones continued their strong starts to the season. Ishimatsu won the 1-meter with 302.70 and the 3-meter with 300.08, edging Arizona's Ainsley Oliver (296.40) in the latter. Jones won the 1-meter with 347.48 and the 3-meter with 441.60, both by considerable margins.

USC dominated the 400y IM, going 1-2-3, led by Hosszu's pool record of 4:08.71 (USC season best, NCAA `B' cut). Hawthorne followed in second (4:18.49) with Schmitt third (4:22.43). Hosszu erased Kristine Quance's 1996 record of 4:10.90. The men's 400y IM was claimed by Arizona's Austen Thompson (3:52.08), leading a 1-2-3 Wildcat finish.

Closing the meet, Carlson, DePaul, Simms and sophomore Kate Shumway took second in the 200y free relay in 1:33.31 to Arizona's 1:31.67. USC's men's quartet of Morozov, senior Emmett Walling, junior Jeff Daniels and Lefert was also second in 1:20.14, a season best and NCAA `B' cut. Arizona won in 1:19.73.

USC hosts Arizona State's men's and women's teams and the Arizona men on Saturday (Nov. 13), starting at noon.
