College of New Jersey vs. Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, November 6. JUNIORS Austin Mizzell (Bristol, Conn.) and Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) both posted two first-place finishes to key the efforts of the Southern Connecticut State University men's swimming and diving team in its meet against The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon at Hutchinson Natatorium. The Lions won the meet by a score of 168-118.

Sorena finished first in both the 200 freestyle (1:40.2) and the 500 freestyle (4:44.95) and was second in the 200 fly (1:56.89). Mizzell claimed the 100 breaststroke (59.75) and the 200 breaststroke (2:10.86) and was third in the 200 IM (2:02.27).

Miguel Nesrala (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) won the 100 freestyle in 47.65 seconds and was second in the 50 freestyle (21.85).

In addition, the Owls had two relay teams record first place marks. The 200 medley relay team of Oscar Castillo (Norwalk, Conn.), Mizzell, Nesrala and Sorena was first with a time of 1:37.39. The 400 freestyle relay tandem of Nesrala, Michael DiVerniero (East Haven, Conn.), Thomas Hardy (East Massapequa, N.Y.) and Thomas Kuhn (Yakima, Wash.) placed first with a time of 3:22.07.

Chad Snyder (Winchester Center, Conn.) finished second on both the one- and three-meter boards for the Owls.

Castillo also finished second in the 100 backstroke (55.7) and Kuhn was third in the 100 fly (55.34).

The Owl men are back in action on Nov. 20 for the USMMA Invite.

For the women, sophomore Amanda Thomas (Watertown, Conn.), senior Jennifer O'Neil (Stratford, Conn.) and junior Amanda Burden (Orange, Conn.) all posted multiple first-place finishes to lead the Southern Connecticut State University women's swimming and diving team against The College of New Jersey on Saturday. The Lions won the meet by a score of 168.5-129.5.

Thomas touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:13.8), 200 fly (2:09.56) and 200 backstroke (2:09.88). O'Neil claimed the 100 breaststroke (1:06.86) and 200 breaststroke (2:26.12) and added a third place finish in the 100 freestyle (54.99). Burden finished first in both the one- and three-meter diving events and reached a NCAA cut on the one-meter board.

Hannah Olson (Torrington, Conn.) placed second in the 200 fly (2:19.67) and third in the 100 fly (1:02.97). Nicole Huerta (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was second in the 500 freestyle (5:20.56) and was followed by Meghan Fay (Branford, Conn.), who posted a time of 5:23.5.

Anna Pleban (Seymour, Conn.) was second in the 50 free (25.54), while Laura Richard (Trumbull, Conn.) was third in one-meter diving. Lauren Sasso (Orange, Conn.) finished third in the three-meter diving event.

The 400 free relay team of Pleban, Fay, O'Neil and Huerta finished second in that event as well.

The Owl women return to action on Nov. 13 when they host C.W. Post at 1 p.m.
