Purdue vs. Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Indiana, November 6. THE Purdue swimming and diving teams both topped Notre Dame in closely contested dual meets Saturday afternoon, capping a successful weekend road trip that saw the Boilermakers post a combined 4-0 mark in duals.

The Purdue women won the final three events of the day, and nine of the 16 altogether, to rally for a 155-145 victory. The Purdue men were victorious in 11 of the 16 events en route to posting a 173-127 win. After also sweeping their Big Ten Conference openers at Northwestern Friday evening, both Purdue teams are now 3-0 in dual meets this season. The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they host Eastern Michigan for a 6 p.m. dual.

"Notre Dame battled us hard today and was prepared from the start," Purdue women's coach John Klinge said. "Our women were up and down but fought hard, especially the second half of the meet. Lauren Gustafson really came through on the end of our 200 free relay with a great swim to keep the lead for us.

"Our Boilermaker Award winners this weekend were Lauren Roth Friday night for her tough double, winning the 200 free and 200 fly with only a few minutes between the two events. And today, Allie Smith and Lauren Gustafson really stepped up. Allie Smith was sick but raced hard and won two races; Lauren Gustafson for her relay performance on the 200 free relay."

"That was a gut check today," Purdue men's coach Dan Ross said. "We beat a very good Notre Dame team today that will be tough to beat in the Big East. This weekend featured two meets in 22 hours on the road in two different cities. Different guys stepped up each day making these two wins a true team effort."

Purdue trailed 127-118 as the scores were being entered for the 3-meter dive, the 14th of the women's 16 events. Erin Mertz added a 3-meter win to go along with the 1-meter victory she had posted earlier in the day. Mertz's win coupled with a combined five points from Kara Cook and Maddie Miskulin tied the score of the dual with the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay remaining.

Allie Smith stepped up and won the 200 IM to give the Boilermakers the lead. Earlier in the day, the senior was victorious in the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 55.27. Smith also finished second in the 200 back.

Lisa Butler, Lauren Nichols, Lauren Roth and Lauren Gustafson then teamed up to seal the dual meet victory for Purdue by winning the 200 free relay, posting another season-best time for the Boilermakers.

Caitlin Hamilton matched Smith with a pair of individual victories, touching first in both distance freestyle events. After winning the 1,000 by more 25 seconds, she took the 500 earlier in the day.

Ariel Martin and Butler also keyed the team win with strong showings in the sprint freestyle events. Butler won the 100 and finished second in the 50. Martin won the 200, finished second in the 100 and third in the 50.

Other second-place finishes came from Lauren Roth in the 200 butterfly and 500 free, Emily Fogle in the 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay team of Smith, Fogle, Butler and Martin.

David Boudia broke both of his own pool records at Notre Dame's Rolfs Aquatic Center while winning the 1- and 3-meter dives with scores of 394.95 and 473.47, respectively. Danny Cox was second in the 1-meter.

Purdue dominated the freestyle and butterfly events, posting six individual victories in those strokes. Ben Wachtel and Chuck Destro led the way again Saturday. Wachtel won the 50 and 100 free and finished second in the 200 free. He also swam the anchor leg of the victorious 200 free relay team.

Destro posted an individual victory in the 100 back and was part of both relay winners, swimming the leadoff leg of the 400 medley and the third segment of the 200 free. Matt Friede was also part of the two relay winners, which both post new season-best times for the Boilermakers.

Freshman Eduard Galdeano was the top performer in the butterfly events, winning the 200 and finishing second to teammate Brendan Joyce in the 100. Joyce posted a new season-best time by a Boilermaker in the 100 fly in the process.

Drew Wolfred was the top performer in the distance freestyle events. He won the 500 free and finished second to teammate Matt Stewart in the mile. Led by Stewart's victory in the 1650 free, Purdue posted the top four times.

Benjamin Ziolkowski also contributed to the team win by swimming the leadoff leg for the victorious 200 free relay team and finishing second to Wachtel in the 50 free. Wyatt Hodges and Daniel Michael swam the breaststroke and butterfly legs, respectively, of the 400 medley relay winner.
