Holy Cross vs. Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts, October 30. THE Springfield College women's swimming and diving team splashed into the 2010-11 season with a home win over Holy Cross. The Pride defeated the Crusaders by a score of 181 to 114.

For Springfield, Meghan Sisson and Aimee Doe won multiple events. Sisson dominated the long-distance events, taking first in the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 11:04.72 and first in the 500 yard free in 5:26.05. Doe handled the shorter distances, winning the 200 yard freestyle in 1:57.50 and the 100 yard free in 54.40, edging out teammate Kaitlin Reilly in both events.

The Pride also saw several other athletes open the season with event wins. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Janella Cuyler touched the wall first with a time of 1:12.21. Senior Meredith Trumbull won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:12.98, while Kellie Pennington kicked off her collegiate career in style, sprinting to a victory in the 50 yard free in 25.32. Classmate Kelsey Poole followed suit with a 200 yard backstroke win with a time of 2:17.82. Junior Jennifer Carignan won the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:33.92.

Springfield also cruised the 200 yard medley relay, with Poole, Pennington, Reilly, and Jaclyn VanWaalwijk completing the team race in 1:54.89.

In diving, freshman Jennifer Thompson started off her career with a win in the one-meter, finishing with a score of 258.21. In the three-meter, Springfield finished 1-2, with Paige Rhodes tallying a 257.02 and Kyra Breitweiser scoring 233.92.

The Pride will look to follow up on their victory with a home meet versus the University of Rhode Island next Saturday. Events will get underway at 1:00 pm.
