College of Charleston vs. Davidson

DAVIDSON, North Carolina, October 30. THE Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving teams begin their pursuit of the 2011 CCSA Championship when they defeated the College of Charleston Cougars in the team's regular-season league opener Saturday afternoon at Cannon Pool. The defending champion Wildcat men downed the Cougars, 180-111, while the Wildcat women earned a 213-84 victory.

Davidson swept the relays, with both the men and women earning victories in the 200 medley and 200 free relays, and senior Lindsey Martin, junior Geoffrey Peitz and sophomore Drew Onken each won three individual titles and swam three season-best times.

"The team embraced today's competitive opportunities with tremendous enthusiasm," head coach John Young said. "I am exceedingly proud of our performances, and also of the extent to which we enjoyed our support for one another. Much of the season remains, but today we were treated to a glimpse of what this team may be capable of."

Martin won the first of her three titles with a time of 1:52.69 in the 200 free, beating out senior Anna Stringfield, who finished second in 1:54.62. Martin (23.79) later went one-two with senior Emily Castle (24.46) in the 50 free, before she won her third title with a time of 52.04 in the 100 free, ahead of sophomore Jean DeOrnellas (54.03).

Junior Geoffrey Peitz swept the backstrokes, winning the 100 back with a time of 52.02, and 200 back with a time of 1:56.44, and won a third title with a time of 50.37 in the 100 fly.

Sophomore Drew Onken swept the breaststrokes, winning the 100 in 58.37 and the 200 in 2:07.02, and picked up a third title, winning the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.80.

Turning in a pair of season bests, senior Jessica Delgehausen was also a multiple-event winner for the Wildcats, winning both the 1000 free with a time of 10:36.84 and the 500 free with a time of 5:10.97, as was CCSA Diver of the Week Kaliya Burton-Akright, who swept the diving events, winning the 1-meter dive with a score of 235.58 and the 3-meter with a score of 209.70.

Freshman Ethan Levinson, sophomore Wills Cooper and junior David Kerman were also individual event winners for the Wildcat men, while Castle, Stringfield and Ineke Stegger, juniors Lauren Kamperman and Allison Cottle, and freshman Caroline Vrana each won individual titles for the Wildcat women.

Levinson won his first career individual title with a season-best time of 10:09.94 in the 1000 free, and Cooper won the 50 free with a time of 21.87. Kerman (1:56.14) beat out freshman Thomas Bigham (1:56.50) at the finish to win the 200 fly.

Castle won the 100 fly with a time of 56.20, her best of the season and as the only swimmer to go under a minute in the event, and Stringfield took the 200 back with a time of 2:08.23. Vrana won her first career event with a first-place finish in the 100 breast with a season-best time of 1:08.68, and Stegger took the title in the 200 breast with a season-best time of 2:27.77. Cottle won the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.31, and Kamperman won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.89, the Wildcats' final individual title of the day, and each also season bests.

The Wildcat women kicked off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as Stringfield, Stegger, Castle and Alexa Richardson finished with a winning, season-best time of 1:50.82. Davidson completed the sweep of the 200 medley relays when senior Tennant Brastow, Onken, junior Joe Burquist and senior Bryan Droll followed with a winning time of 1:35.59.

And Davidson finished the impressive showing with victories in both the 200 free relays. Castle, DeOrnellas, VanTassell and Martin won the women's 200 free relay with a season-best time of 1:36.82, while Peitz, Cooper, junior Curtis Chaney and junior Kerman did the same in 1:27.24 on the men's side. Both times were also season bests.

After a weekend off, the Wildcats will return to action when they travel to William & Mary for a 1 p.m. meet on Saturday, Nov. 13.
