Florida State vs. Louisiana State

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, October 30. THE LSU women's swimming and diving squad won 12 of 16 events to emerge victorious over Florida State, 176-124, Saturday in the LSU Natatorium, while the Tigers edged out the Seminoles with clutch performances down the stretch to prevail, 155-145.

The Lady Tigers improved to 4-1 on the season, while the men (1-2) picked up their first victory of 2010-11.

A pair of wins and a pool record from senior Jane Trepp and individual event sweeps by sophomores Rebecca St. Germain and Amanda Kendall and freshman Torrey Bussey led the Lady Tigers to victory.

A clutch, three-meter diving victory from junior Matt Vieke late in the meet and a win from the men's 400 freestyle relay tandem of Andrei Tuomola, Michael Saco, Martin Jungfleisch and Hannes Heyl propelled the Tigers past the Noles.

"It was a great, all-around team effort," co-head coach David Geyer said. "We knew coming in that we would have to step up as a team, and every point was going to matter. The women came in and took control of the meet with a great performance from start to finish.

"We knew the men's meet would be a boxing match. We knew we were going to take some punches or some hits, but how were we going to respond to those hits? We stepped up with some great performances, but overall this was probably the best team performance I've seen from LSU in the last six years."

Trepp continues to make her case as one of the premier freestyle sprinters in the country with her third sub-23 second effort in the 50 free this early in the season. The Estonian improved her own pool record in the event Saturday, racing to victory in 22.86 seconds. Later in the meet, she topped the field in the 100 butterfly with a season best of 54.76.

St. Germain, who won the one-meter and three-meter springboard diving events in Friday night's win over Tulane, also captured both events Saturday to post a weekend sweep. The San Antonio native's mark of 326.25 in her three-meter win against the Noles was a career high.

Kendall claimed wins in the 100 and 200 free with times of 50.72 and 1:49.80, respectively, while Bussey swam to victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.06), 200 breast (2:17.80) and 400 individual medley (4:24.20).

In addition, sophomore Sara Haley notched the win in the 200 fly (2:01.55), and the Lady Tigers swept the 200 medley and 400 free relays with marks of 1:42.93 and 3:23.64, respectively.

On the men's side, Vieke came through with a huge performance in the three-meter dive, delivering a career high and winning score of 354.45 to help turn the score in the Tigers' favor. The mark, which is eighth in program history, also qualified the Indianapolis native for the NCAA Zone Diving Regional.

Freshman diver Daniel Helm pitched in with third-place finishes in the one-meter (303.67) and three-meter (341.78).

The men's 400 free relay sealed the meet for LSU with a winning time of 3:00.63, spearheaded by Heyl's 43.80 anchor split. The senior also gave the Tigers big wins in the 100 backstroke (49.74) and 100 fly (49.60).

Fellow senior Clint Hallum cruised to victory in the 400 I.M. (3:59.28) and 200 free (1:40.85), while Jungfleisch and sophomore Nick Kunkel stepped up with victories in the 200 fly (1:50.07) and 200 back (1:49.99), respectively.

Sophomore Andrei Tuomola also finished on top with a 45.24 clocking in the 100 free, and the Tigers' 200 medley relay foursome of James Meyers, Tuomola, Heyl and Saco opened the meet in victorious fashion with a time of 1:30.24.

The LSU men dive back into action this Thursday when the Tigers face SEC foe Florida at 1 p.m. (CT) in the LSU Natatorium. For more information, check back with LSUsports.net, become a fan on our Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/LSUSwimDive) or follow us on Twitter @LSUSwimDive.
