South Dakota vs. Iowa State

AMES, Iowa, October 29. THE Iowa State swimming and diving team collected wins in 14 of the 16 events Friday night as the Cyclones knocked off the South Dakota Coyotes 165-125 at Beyer Pool. The win improves Iowa State to 2-1 on the season.

"I thought we were very solid all the way through," Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. "I was pleased with how our breaststroke swimmers swam, with Jeli Nixt winning the 100 and Emily Wiltsie winning and posting a good time in the 200 breast."

The Cyclones started off the meet strong with a pair 1-2 finishes in the 200 medley relay and 1000 freestyle. The team of Dani Harris, Nixt, Elena Carvell and Katie Vollhaber took the top spot in the relay with a time of 1:49.65. Freshman Alex Gustafson continued to show promise in the distance events, taking first in the 1000, clocking a time of 10:54.17.

Jenny Vondenkamp continued her good start to the season, picking up victories in the 200 and 500 free. Vondenkamp won the 200 in 1:56.25 and took the 500 in 5:08.61.

"Fantastic 500 by Jenny," Sorenson noted. "Alex Gustafson was chasing her the whole way and Jenny was determined not to let her pass. Jenny came through again to come from behind in the 200."

Harris was victorious again in the 100 back, dominating the field with her 57.93. Near the close of the meet, Harris picked up win number three on the night in the 400 IM with her time of 4:36.62.

"I was pleased with how Dani Harris swam her 100 back and her 400 IM," Sorenson stated. "We knew that she could be a good 400 IMer but she never got the chance to compete in the race last season. Today was a good opportunity to see what she could do. We know she can go a lot faster."

Nixt put together a first place effort in the 100 breast, going 1:07.84. Carvell picked up her second victory of the night in the 100 fly, clocking a time of 59.36.

Tiana Wollin has continued to be a consistent performer for the Cyclones, taking first in the 200 butterfly, going 2:11.54.

Chelsea Tomek took the title in the 200 back, touching first in 2:10.34. Emily Wiltsie continued the strong start to her Iowa State swimming career, winning the 200 breast in 2:26.11.

The Iowa State divers were led Friday night by Abby Christensen. The senior took the 1-meter diving event with a score of 261.82.

"I didn't think overall they dove as well as they did against Nebraska-Omaha, but we were not far off," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "Some people did step up, with Jessica on 1-meter and Justine on 3-meter. The big thing is to look to tomorrow, make some slight adjustments and score higher."

Jessica Nicholson continued to impress on her debut season, posting a career-high score of 254.91 on 1-meter.

"She is doing a great job," Warrick said. "She is training hard and I couldn't ask for more from her in practice. It could be tomorrow, it could be against Northern Iowa, it could be against anybody but I think she can knock off the Zone score and put it behind her. She just needs to put her dives together."

Lauren Naeve took the 3-meter title for the second meet in a row, posting a winning score of 265.70.

The Cyclones are back in action tomorrow with a double-dual meet against South Dakota State and Western Illinois. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
