Swimming Canada Announces New Additions to Board of Directors

BANFF, Canada, October 25. THE national governing body for competitive swimming in Canada, Swimming Canada, is pleased to announce the new additions to its board of directors following what was said to be a greatly successful AGM in Banff, Alberta this past weekend.

As Swimming Canada delegates from across the country welcomed newly appointed President, David de Vlieger of Calgary, Alberta, and Vice-President Sean Finn of St-Lambert, Quebec, as well as newly elected board directors Sandy Lowther of PEI, Jim Shaw of Toronto, On, and Dorothy Miller of North Vancouver, BC (re-elect), and returning Directors Anne Bell of Toronto (Secretary) and David Davidson of Halifax, they also honoured the labours of two great leaders, Dan Thompson and Brian Johnson as they step down from the board.

"We are privileged as a sport and a country to have Dan [Thompson] and Brian [Johnson] dedicate so much time and efforts into building the new foundation of our organisation and setting us on the right path of swimming to win; winning for life," said CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada, Pierre Lafontaine.

The two past swimming Olympians, Thompson and Johnson, who have both held the position of President and Vice-President since 2004, were instrumental in creating Swimming Canada's new strategic direction leading up to the 2012 games and beyond.

"We have come so far," said exiting President Brian Johnson. "I'm really confident that we will keep this momentum going of striving to excellence in all aspects of Swimming Canada."

"It's been really rewarding for us to take part in this organisational shift," said Dan Thompson. "Collectively, we have created alignment throughout the country, and most of all, brought change to the face of our culture."

The courage to dream, the commitment to win

Even if the 2012 Olympics is just around the corner, Lafontaine's 20-20 vision was felt during the AGM meetings and sessions.

"We can make great changes in two years as we prepare to face the world in London, we've proved it," said Lafontaine. "I strongly feel that as a nation, we can be great. It's time to make the dream happen. We can be the number one sport of choice in the country."
