West Virginia vs. Marshall

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, October 23. THE West Virginia University women's swimming and diving team used a total team effort to defeat Marshall, 170.5-124.5, this afternoon in Huntington, W.Va.

"It is always good to take this trip to get ready for future road trips and the women raced well today," coach Vic Riggs said. "We needed to improve on some things from last week and I feel that we did."

The 400 medley relay of junior Jaryn Studer, sophomore Mandie Nugent and freshmen Danielle Smith and Eva Burlingham started the meet off with a first-place finish in a time of 3:57.34.

Sophomore Kata Fodor and senior Caroline Larsson followed suit with first (10:15.89) and second (10:28.87) place finishes, respectively. Senior Lyn Ann Nelson and sophomore Sara Conner placed first (1:55.54) and second (1:58.58) in the 200 free as well.

Continuing the first-place finishes was Smith who took first (58.56) in the 100 back, followed by sophomore Nikki Vetterlein (1:00.49) who finished second. Studer placed first (1:08.91) in the 100 breast and was followed by sophomore Breanna McCann in second (1:09.13) and freshman Melissa Schreiber (1:09.25) in third.

Nugent then continued the streak with a first-place finish (2:02.42) in the 200 fly, while sophomore Rachael Burnett came in third place (2:05.36). Nugent recorded her second first-place finish of the day with a time of 57.65 in the 100 fly.

Burlingham claimed her first individual title with a top finish in the 50 free (25.50). Burlingham then placed second (54.72) in the 100 free, while Nelson placed first (54.49) in the event.

Smith claimed another first-place finish (2:07.00) in the 200 back and was followed by sophomore Austen Carrington in second (2:08.08) and sophomore Sara Conner in third (2:09.71).

Schreiber recorded her first career first-place finish in the 200 breast in a time of 2:26.59. Schreiber was followed by Studer in second (2:27.64) and McCann in third place (2:28.95).

In the 500 free, the Mountaineers had the top four finishes with Burnett placing first (4:58.11), Fodor finishing second (5:08.08), sophomore Sloan Storie in third (5:11.54) and Larsson in fourth (5:13.12).

The 400 free relay team of Burlingham, Nugent, Smith and freshman Kaitie Layne finished the meet in exhibition mode with a first-place finish in a time of 3:37.61.

Both the men's and women's squads will be back in action on Nov. 5 when they travel to Louisville. The meet will begin at 5 p.m.
