Rose-Hulman Relays

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana, October 23. THE Fightin' Engineer swimming and diving teams opened their 2009-10 schedule with the annual Rose-Hulman Relays on Saturday.

The men tied with Lindenwood for top honors and were led by sophomore Jake Sheets (Plainfield/Avon), who recorded three second place finishes in three relays, 800 yard freestyle, 400 yard medley, and the 1500 yard free.

Sophomore Matt Ross (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison), junior John Patterson (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore John Huster (Terre Haute, Ind./North Vigo) combined to win the 3×100 yard butterfly relay with a time of 2:40.66.

Patterson also finished second in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

The women placed two points behind Lindenwood University for a strong second place at the meet and were led by two teams which won their respective events.

Sophomore Nicole Richardson (Janesville, Wis./George Parker) bolstered the team score with first-place finishes in one- and three-meter diving. Richardson scored 159 points in one-meter and 177.5 points in three-meter.

The 3-x-100 yard breaststroke team of freshman Stephanie McCown (Finksburg, Md./Westminster), freshman Mary Schultz (Harrison, Ohio) and senior Katie Trella (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine Township) won with a time of 4:18.17.

Trella also teamed with sophomore Carley Shumate (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) and sophomore Shannon Cunnien (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) to win the 1500 yard freestyle in 17:28.26.

The swimming teams are in action again next Saturday as they travel to Illinois Wesleyan.
